Such a very informative video, thank you for sharing all these details! I really enjoy your podcast and it's such a joy to listen to. English is also not my first language and I appreciate your cool accent 😊 Regarding the question on promotions vs. ads, for me it highly depends on what the KZbinr is promoting, but in general I really dislike it when the person is trying so hard to convince me how great a product is and how we should go and spend our money on it with their promo code (looking at all these Skillshare promos since Skillshare is just a worse version of KZbin anyway!). I'd rather just have a random ad.

Thanks for posting this! As a new "podcaster" I have been curious about this as well and I also started with no intention of making money or becoming a sensation here 😂. I know that a while back, some of the videos (from other channels) were so overloaded with ad breaks (I counted one every ~30 seconds for a 30-minute episode), that I gave up and didn't watch any of them for a week or more. I have a feeling YT was testing some software/algorithm. If I enjoy a channel, expecting at least one ad at the beginning, middle, and end is tolerable. Beyond that I can get annoyed but then that depends on my mood as well!

So if all viewers were premium subscribers and saw zero ads, how do creators get paid then?
@GeorgiaMontgomery-i2i4 күн бұрын
Personally, I don’t think you should have to do that pay extra….. I EXPECT to have to suffer through a few ads it is all part of the whole channel, AND WATCHING IT THROUGH YOU TUBE….it won’t stop me continuing to watch - I appreciate it takes hours of your time along with special equipment just to share the world of knitting - When I see what you produce - I am in awe - keep going as long as you are enjoying it and it works with your LIFE - good luck! :)

Interesting, i also watch young folk knits and I don't get as many ads as you said you get.🤔 I don't have premium or anything else, and all ads have had the option to skip. Is this regional? I'm from Finland. Anyway , thanks for the interesting video.😊

A very interesting podcast! I always wondered what was in it for podcasters. Ads are a necessary evil in my opinion. As far as I can remember, there were only 2 or 3 in this whole episode, quite well spread out. I wish you well in your journey.

I have definitely stopped watching some creators because they had too many ads.
@JoJoSXMGyal8 күн бұрын
Here is the thing, I get that the ads help the podcasters and all but if you pay KZbin you don't see ads so how does that work. I don't have cable TV since eons because i simply can't with the ads/commercials (I use streaming apps). So same goes for KZbin. And for those where the podcaster do the ads themselves I have an addon that skips that too. It's not that I don't want to support the podcaster it's just that I rather support in another way rather than with ads.
@YourKnittingBestie7 күн бұрын
An interesting perspective, thank you! I understand that if you watch on KZbin premium (which I believe is the one with no ads), I would still get a financial incentive based on your watch time. From what I can see in my analytics, it seems to be a small percentage of viewers who watch from premium but it sounds like a great option!

Hi Nadine, that was so informative and like finding out the secrets behind the process. I always knew youtube wasn't a money making for the majority of podcasters. I love your videos and look forward to more. Ads are annoying no matter when and it depends if I'm just sitting watching or making pottery or doing some other chores as to whether it's annoying that I can't skip. But ads are the way podcasters and youtube operates so we have to tolerate them (and get just a tad impatient, especially since sometimes those ads come at the worst time lolol! My tolerance for ads is up to 1 every 5 mins of content. After that I just can’t watch even if it’s interesting. Also, this may be controversial but I actually like affiliate links if the creators are genuine. If they are pitching something I know is not great quality then of course, I would loose respect but I actually love recommendations and I figure none of us are forced to spend our money. So if you get paid, as an affiliate, for something you recommend and I really like it then I see that as a win for both and I’m happy to pay you something for your time and opinion.

Thank you so much for this episode Nadine, so informative, you have inspired me to look into monetising my own podcast and given me just the right amount of food for thought on that subject. Researching tech stuff is not my strong point, so when someone can put all you need to know into a lovely little nutshell, it is really so helpful! And for my contribution on the subject of ads, like some of the other comments below, I would of course prefer to watch a podcast uninterrupted by ads, but don't mind one or two interruptions especially if there is an option to skip, and if there isn't, I tend to get up and pop the kettle on at that point! I learn such a lot from other contributors here on you tube, and if they are able to earn a little from one of two ads in order to put their content up here, then I feel that is a happy medium. I am also ok with affiliate links that are relevant to the content of the podcast - they can often be very helpful and can save people lots of internet-trawling/ decision making time and viewers can use them or not, of course, so it's totally optional. Thanks again for your time, content and information and for a lovely podcast, I look forward to the next knit catch-up x Kate

I don’t like multiple interruptions during a video but accept that they are there and am happy to ‘suffer’ them for the youtubers I like (you for one 😊) Is it true that you get more income if we allow the advert to run through completely as opposed to skipping as soon as we can? If that is the case I would happily let them run. Just one thing though, please don’t spend all your ‘earnings’ on expensive yarns that are outside the budget for the majority of us. I find that is generally what makes me switch off completely 🫣
@YourKnittingBestie7 күн бұрын
You're too kind, thank you!! I might have to do some research into whether there is a better incentive if viewers watch the whole ad, that's a great question. Thank you for the tip about expensive yarn, I have to admit I feel the same when I see some creators exclusively using yarns I couldn't afford for more than a special occasion!

Love the inside look on how it all works. I don’t mind a few ads and feel like that is helping you, the producer of the content but agree that it is good if they are thoughtfully placed. I have watched podcasts where an add interrupt a statement or section that seems very disruptive. I would like to know if you get paid more if we watch the ad vs. choose to skip it. On longer podcasts I try to use the ad time to get a new cup of tea and will just let the ad run. Would love to have a podcast about what other podcasts you enjoy, how you keep up with them all, etc.
@YourKnittingBestie7 күн бұрын
Thank you so much for your insight and for the topic suggestion! I'm not 100% sure, but I saw another influencer say once that we get the same incentive regardless of whether you skip the ad or let it play through (thankfully as i think most people skip!!)
@YourKnittingBestie7 күн бұрын
Actually, I've just done a spot of research and apparently there's only an incentive if people watch the whole ad or the first 30 seconds if it's a longer ad. I had no idea! Of course no pressure at all to change your viewing habits 🩷

Thanks very much for this Nadine. It's something I've always been interested in. I had actually started to try to find information about this simply because the ad situations on some channels are so annoying. I now understand that this might be something about which the podcaster is totally unaware. Your suggestion of two ad breaks during a video is very reasonable. Interestingly, I only had one during this video and one at the end. Something I've always been interested in is whether you can control the volume of ads. They would be so much less intrusive for late-night viewing if they weren't so loud.
@YourKnittingBestie7 күн бұрын

Hello Nadine, Thank you for your openness and honesty about KZbin and how it works for all of you podcasters. Sounds like a bunch of rigmarole for you!!! As for me, I enjoyed way-back-when, when we didn’t even have to worry about things called ads on KZbin. If I had a choice, I wouldn’t mind having you speak about your sponsor up front, as long as it was knitting or crafting related. What I really struggle with is selling jewelry, make-up, clothing or things that have no relation to what the podcast is about. Then maybe you could place an ad more toward the end, if that works? You are the only podcaster, that I am aware of, that has even talked about this and is genuinely interested in what your viewers think and our opinions. Thank you for that thoughtfulness.

Hi Nadine. This was so interesting to watch - thank you SO much for it - for taking the time to research it, present it to us and explain what you found! I have been wondering about ads on KZbin generally and why sometimes there’s heaps and some channels have few, and one I watch weekly has no ads at all! I’ve been trying to work out if it’s the time of day I watch, the popularity of the channel, the recentness of the episode, and how much it’s controlled by the podcaster, with no conclusions lol . . . When the ads become so frequent they interrupt the flow of the video (like, every 5 mins!) I can’t watch it and stop watching that channel usually, sometimes permanently and l end up unsubscribing, which is disappointing as I love the content of the ones I watch. Since you’ve adjusted yours it’s a pleasure to watch! I couldn’t say what’s an acceptable quantity, but I tend to agree with a lot of the other comments that two ad breaks maybe, beginning and end, if we have to have any at all haha! Thank you again. Jen xx
