Knitter from California here, so I feel your pain with needing cooler knitwear. Regarding your ranunculus, I think it is salvageable. If you sewed elastic at the neck- using elasticated thread on the wrong side of the garment- it would raise the sleeve cuffs perhaps just enough (or you could undo a few rows of the cuff ribbing). I do think the neckline looks beautiful as is, so perhaps just redoing the cuff castoff location would be easier… And then, the color. Yes, it matches your skin tone. But color is just dye, and dye can be over-dyed. For the many hours you put into knitting it, it’s worth the hour or two to mordant and dye it, and if the fabric is washable that could be as easy as throwing into a top-loading machine with some RIT dye. You did a beautiful job, so don’t give up on it!

Hello from Melbourne, it's lovely to find another aussie podcaster. I am obsessed with the Ranunculus I'm knitting #6. I have knitted short sleeves, long sleeves, changed the bottom hem, used Noro, Fiori, Ella Rae cotton and King cole cotton silk and they all look different and fabulous. I find using a 5.5mm needle gives a nicer gauge than the recommended 6mm. Also with the wider neckline I use the german twisted co and co the number of stitches required ( at the end of row 8 ) and just knit 7 or 8 rows of twisted rib then straight into the short row section.

Hello! It sounds like you are our resident Ranunculus expert 😄 of the fibres you've used, I'd love to know which was your favourite? (so that I can shamelessly copy your homework 😆). I'll have to give the 5.5 a go on my next one!

I often tell the husbter that we should move to Tassie, just to wear all the knits. We live on the Blue Mountains side of Sydney, it can get very snappy in winter, I'd like a longer winter for maximum knit opportunities. I only just finished knitting a Flax for 2 yr old grandson for this coming winter, I turned it into a cardigan and also continued the garter panel down the side of the body, looks great. I knitted a beautiful cable, shawl collar cardi for my grandie girl when she was a bub from Spotlight's Stallion. It was so smooshy & soft except it grew and grew and grew!. I hadn't knitted with superwash acrylic before and Stallion was on special so I bought loads, thinking of years of grandie knits........I still have 2 tubs in storage and quite a few crocheted blankets. I've never had such a problem with growth with superwash wool, so I wasn't expecting a little cropped baby cardi to grow into a knee length dressing gown in the end, lol

Haha! I just LOVE ‘hubster’ as a nickname 😁 I’d take any reason to move to Tassie, but the opportunity to wear knits more often would be high on the list 😉 I’ve never used superwash acrylic before but that it’s good to know about the growth. Luckily im sure the dressing gown look is adorable on your grandie girl!! 😁

Very informative and so very well curated. As a beginner knitter myself , it really made me smile, because I realized I had some “errors” patterns myself! My best advice: never ever buy yarn only because it is on sale. I ended up with so much yarn that was never enough for projects, or was not the right weight or it was a horrible color!

Hi Nadine, Kim from NY here… I absolutely loved this video, and now you’ve got me wondering if I have any knit flops in my wardrobe. I obviously review them during the knitting process and immediately after finishing, but I haven’t really gone back and reviewed them later, especially considering why I have or haven’t worn them as much as I thought I would. Hmmm… Maybe I’ll “borrow” your idea (giving you full credit, of course 😉) and do a “knit flops” review of my own. And as a first time viewer, I’ll definitely be back to binge more of your content!!!

Last year I went to Japan and their summers are hot and sticky. I bought some Japanese yarn and loved it. Plant fibres blended with wool and/or in a chainette construction seemed to resolve many of those heaviness issues and at the same time provides a more heathered colour which has a more expensive look.

When knitting in the round, you could put more stitches in the front than in the back to fit better. If you take your chest measurement, look at the number under your arm (not the 0 mark). You may find that if you measure 36 overall, you may be 20 inches in the front but only 16 inches across the back. For instance, if there are 35 stitches for the sleeves and 140 stitches left for the front and back, when you separate for the sleeves, put 66 stitches in the front and 74 stitches for the front. It looks like you could make a smaller size in all the sweaters. When I made the Flax sweater, I did the short rows at the top, so they included the raglan increases. That keeps the sweater from looking droopy when short rows are done after the raglan increases with a heavy yarn. I also put garter stitches every 6 rows in a 12-stitch panel down the front. The colors of yarn you chose were all great colors on you.

I can understand not wanting that thick cotton to wear though. I wonder if you could knit it again with 100% pure silk yarn. Or maybe something with silk and linen content. I don't have any first-hand experience to share because I mostly knit in wool. But I know people in the US and Canada seem to love Knitting for Olive pure silk and maybe you could hold it double this pattern.

G'Day from country NSW. The climate here is hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Being a knitter my winters are set, but I'm still looking for my perfect summer yarn. I have been trying cotton-linen blends for garments, but a lot of my 'summer' knitting tends to be lightweight shawls and flowing cardigans. Your video popped up in my recommendations and I began watching because you're an "Aussie Knitting Podcast". I'm excited to continue watching as I'm loving hearing from a fellow Aussie's knitter. I related so much with the Spotlight yarn experience, especially when I was a newbie knitter. P.S. I love our native birds too! They're one of my favourite things about living in the bush.

You're the first aussie knitter I have met, and I subscribed instantly. You gave me a lot of good tips for the coming summer (I am in Finland). A couple of years ago I knitted a garment with Drops Paris, which is similar to the yarn you used for the Flax. I never wore it, because even though the yoke has some lace pattern, it still feels like body armour 😂. Fortunately the yarn was cheap and the garment ended up costing me only 17 euros. Your Ranunculus is one of the prettiest I have seen. I am tempted to make one just like it.

I lived in south Florida in the United States for 15 years. I found 4 ply/fingering weight pullovers with short sleeves worked best for me. Anything DK/8 ply or heavier was too warm, even in a cardigan. Now that we have moved to a more temperate climate, I can knit long sleeve 4 ply or 8 ply pullovers but not tight gauges or heavier weights. Cardigans are also great, but the fabric still needs to be light. It’s a learning curve.

I chose a bamboo yarn for my Outline Tank and had the same issues as you. It is too big and slips off my shoulders. I think I will be frogging mine as the yarn is stunning and too good to waste. Your self drafted sweater looked lovely. My downfall is not having the right amount of short row shaping for my liking. If I master this then I will wear more of my knits and not give them away or frog them.

Just found your channel. I live in Finland and I use those thicker cotton yarns on colder summer days, in autumn and in spring. So that is from -10-+10c. I use dk/worsted merino in winter and that from -10c to about -20c. Of course I would use warm winter coat outside on that. I like lace weight and fingering yarns in my summer sweaters. I do like merino cotton blends and merino both with superwash finish for easier care. Light merino yarns are wonderful yarns in summer because wool can take up to 10% liquid in before feeling damp or wet. It also is light and airy to wear. I also like light flax yarns. Those are harder for hands, but lovely to wash and wear. I burn easily in sun. That is why I like to knit my summer sweaters and t shirts mostly with stockinet stitch and lace pattern in side of torso part of garment.

I’ve found that worsted weight wool is too heavy even for Melbourne winters. The sweet spot for me is fingering weight, perhaps with mohair for a really warm, but light, jumper. You might want to consider linen/cotton/wool mixes in thin yarn. Also cardigans with lace or other holes to allow airflow, as you mentioned.

Hi Nadine, as for buying yarns from Spotlight I would generally stay away from the shop. In previous years I did purchase yarn from them but I think generally their quality is now not of such a good standard. As for the belissimo 4ply, my experience is that it is also warm. I knitted a lace cardigan in 4ply as well as 8ply top, both too warm. I live in the desert and although this year has been humid, (not nearly as humid as Brisbane) it is generally a clear heat here. I am using linen yarn so maybe give it a go. Great lot of imformation. Well done

The great part of looking back now even though there's disappointment, you not only are figuring out what weight or style of garments work for you in that climate, but also just the other knitting experience in general. I live in a similar climate and even though I have knit a few sweaters, I do tend to prefer cardigans as I go between air conditioning, heat and humidity, and for my age (ugh hormones 🥵). I had a sleeveless top/tank in a color like the Buff you had and my husband used to do double takes and tell me he thought I had no shirt on. I eventually got rid of that one 😂 Have you thought of projects that you can repurpose the yarn for? Thanks for the episode!

I'm using a DK weight yarn and I quite like the fabric on the 6mm needles. i did the crochet provisional cast on where you do half the number of stitches, and then yarn over every second stitch that is recommended in the pattern and I quite like the neckline. i didn't believe it would fit over my head as it looked so small but the twisted rib is very stretchy and once you remove the waste yarn from the provisional cast on the edge is super stretchy.

I made the Outline Tee in Tynn line and it’s way too large for me. I don’t wear it. Maybe I will unravel it but I’m not sure. I don’t like so much this fiber and the pattern 🙁

Could you over-dye your Ranunculus to achieve a color you like more?

Terrific idea!! Surely it would work out okay since it's such a light colour.

Video suggestion - would be very helpful if you would put up your long beautiful hair so se ca really see it. Also, have you tried any of these in 100% long line linen? I think you will be very pleasantly surprised. Airy, cooling, lightweight, saturated colors.😊 ex. Ereuflax sport or worsted weight

Honestly, any worsted weight and even dk weight yarn is too heavy for a summer sweater.
