I was 5. Was crippled.Had to a brace. So much pain and screaming in such a tiny body. My father said he had lost his golden baby. My mother caught it a bit after me. She had to wear a hugh plaster cast around her middle. Father sister and brand new brother were spared. They lived apart from us. Why did this happen to us? It was 1954. The vaccine was there. We just did have a way to get to it. I'm certain I contracted the viruses from a public swimming pool. You know. That others who didn't want to evaluate away from the water. Went in the water. Is guess someone had to get the disease. And close at hand were two.

Almost died last January. Because got sick. Couldn't use the mouth piece that looks like a sippy straw. Caused salvia dripping out of mouth. Causing me to check. I have a nebulizer for breathing. Also two inhalers. Also have COPD with asthma.

I'm 70 years past poliomyelitis. Troubles are happening for me now. Hard time breathing especially after eating. Or walking with my walking. Now having problems with walking with the breathing stuff. I'm having great problems with walking lots of dragging my legs. And tripping situations.

My mother and I were victims in the summer of 1954. I was 5. She, 26. My mother... Her spine. She had to endure a huge plaster around her torso. From under bust to above hips. She was always of the mind that... Poor baby. There were plastic body casts. But not for her. This was after the War. No money for her to have a fancy brace. But I was victimized in my legs. At 5 . Can anyone imagine a beautiful child left to look like a zombie. Oh. I forgot. I'm 75 now. And literally my frame is falling apart. 1994 introduced the hell of a collapsed ribcage. Which is still shining brightly.

Thank you so very much for all the data presented today. Doctor Marney, if I may call you by your first name. Your presentation was answers to a great many questions I personally desired to know. And the Q&A was so informative. Finally, Brian, thank you for your time and monitoring. I have been diagnosed with Polio in 1952, six months at WarmSprings, GA, and corrective surgeries in 1961 & 1962, including thirteen surgeries in my lifetime to date. In 2005, an Orthopedic physician corrected C-4 through C-7 borrowing bone from my" bad" hip Following Polio I was diagnosed with a right brain stroke in 2008, gastric surgery with three repairs, And the cardiac stent this year. Having given you a bio-history you can see I have had to advocate for myself and sometimes not do an educated one. So I seek solid double-blinded research and any data found is a relief and frankly soak this information like a sponge. Usually, I am a quiet person and only observe but today this pod hit home. So I am stepping up with plaudits of appreciation.

Very helpful! I am 76 years old with left leg affected by polio. The left leg and foot is getting weaker and my right leg and knee has been overstressed in compensating for the weak left leg. I had a knee replacement 3 years ago and continue to have chronic pain in the right knee. The information you shared gave me an insight in how to modify the exercises with rest areas. Thanks!

No the Polio vaccine is the preventive to not getting Polio. Once you have gotten Polio most everything is determined on how effected u are, what effects u are left with. Taking care of your health over the years is key. Most people develop PPS as they get older. Some never do.

OH MY GOD! YYEESSSSS! This presenter has NAILED IT! Seriously, the information in this video should be required CE for all clinicians as well as all peer specialists. People with disabilities need to watch and discuss this. I can literally see the basic tenets in this video becoming a CHEAT SHEET for all folks with disabilities who seek therapy. While I don’t know how a trained clinician will embed these tenets into their work with a client, I would hope this is a start.

I can't express how helpful this presentation is, and how useful it will be for medical professionals of polio patients. I plan to refer this lecture and make the slide presentation notes available to my primary care doctor and physical therapist, who both are looking for direction of this kind. Thank you!

To Ronnie, I would say that if you did share your disability life, it could be a small step of advocacy for the disabled in general. You might find interesting questions or you might find that sharing that part of your life opens you up in such a way that you might enjoy. It appears it might just be an unknown right now for you. But your only reason stated to not do it is that you don't want to get too much focus on it....wasn't really clear as to your reasons. I would suggest you explore sharing your life as it really is, even sharing how it used to be, but in the context of it has changed, and now I do this. But if your PTSD is what comprises you, of course, then you have a good reason for your choices. Regarding people saying "But you look great!", I have a sister, who after listening to my description of needed rest the last few days, just comments, "Well you sound great!" I think able bodied people can appreciate to some degree, but they perhaps hit a wall themselves where they don't really understand, and to bypass any real ongoing discussion because there is fear of their own ignorance, embarrassment that they don't know, or just can't spend the time to know, they end the conversation with such comments. Since she is my sister, it is important for me to wait for another time to again talk about my 'day' and my needs, as well as be as interested in hers.

So many years and still very good information. I am a polio (1950) and was diagnosed in mid 90s with PPS and acquired a ankle brace which I did not wear 100% until later but now my knee is a mess. I do go to water therapy twice a week to help my whole body. Overweight but good health.

Same here on the polio. I'm 67 and losing motion on both legs. With all the technology we have I still can't understand why we don't have an anti-viral that can stop the polio virus from replicating or eliminate it from our bodies like they have with HIV. Interesting, I stabilized all these years and it's now back to finish up what it started back when I was a kid. Maybe the solution to bracing is out side the USA in India and Istanbul where polio is still a problem. There, we have doctors and Orthotist that have experience with polio.
