You guys were at BB King in NY earlier that month, you had on a NY Yankees t shirt. After the show, I was first on line to have Allan sign my blue Carvin guitar. He signed it three times since July of 2000. Jan 4, 2025 I have it for 25 years.

My God. Sounds random but all of the kicks are nailed. Very challenging even for a seasoned player. Their greatness is evident.

Thanks Tim. Yeah it helps having played that piece for around 3 and half decades! (We first recorded it on the IOU album back in 1979). But you’re right, the hits in the sequence are not at all random. They’re composed, but the improvising around them is just that - improvisation. 🙂👍🙏

He replaced lee sklar as James Taylor's bassist - very talented! First found out about him from the pbs james taylor squibnocket pbs special. James had cleaned house with lots of his band at this point except for carlos vega, and arnold mcculler ... all the new recruits (well to me at least) sounded teriffic and had snd still have serious chops

Amazing. This is the beginning that Allan truly started developing his own universe. Sounds SO different from what he was doing in 1979 or even early 1980. Epoch-making. I don't believe he was able to do this without Gary, without the rapport.

I’ve been hooked on Gary’s playing ever since I heard his solo in Letters of Marque. It ripped but was also insanely musical and shadowed the riffs Allan was playing at the same time. Such a tasteful player it’s insane - out a solo in the song that fit perfectly and was still mindful of the song as a whole.

One thing I've not yet had a chance to say (I'm now remembering) - Gary, you had a PROFOUND effect on me with regard to ride cymbals ... how they sound, what colors are possible, what gorgeous waves of tone can do with and for a band's overall sonic picture. At the time I was introduced to the first 3 IOU/Holdsworth albums, I was (in 1989) coming off one of those "ALMOST made it" rock bands, and hearing those albums was some of my first deep diving into Fusion. My head just exploded. I have yet to recover. LOL In recent years you've gone toward drier rides - and I get it, you're not sacrificing all tone and cloudy cushion, but gaining some articulation/clarity. I'm not one to fanboy over gear - but I must admit I have a 22" Dark Energy Mark 1 ride because of you. :D
