The fact that the first basement threw to home shows me he knew it wasn’t a line-out. If it had been a line-out, all the runners should have had to go back to tag up, so the play with all the advanced runners would have been to throw to _third_ for the force, with a possible tag of the running moving from second to third. Double or triple play thanks to lack of tagging up.
@AnonymousFreakYTАй бұрын
The ridiculousness in the bottom of the second, I see two possibilities: 1. The first baseman caught a line drive. That's an instant out of the batter. At that point, all the baserunners were in motion - none had tagged up. The logical throw would have been to *THIRD*, as that would be a force on the runner who had been on third and had not yet returned, and in the confusion, possibly a tag-out of the runner advancing from second for a triple play. 2. The batted ball hit the ground at some point, meaning the catch by the first basement was *NOT* an out. In this instance, the logical throw is to _home_ to prevent the run. The first baseman threw to home. This, to me, is a clear indication that they thought the situation was #2. On the wild throw, other runners moved about. The real catch is: "at what point did active play end and the ball declared dead?" Because that situation with two players on second and the tag may have resulted in an out if the ball wasn't dead yet. But I'm guessing the Springfield coach had already protested, pausing play.

I'm watching the replay of that game this morning and I must say that the bottom of the second inning was interesting, to say the least. The play with the bases loaded (the first time) all hinged on what base umpire Dana Cruz's call was. If she ruled it a catch by the first baseman, the inning should have ended there. However, it appears that she ruled it a no-catch, and that's when the fun started. The first baseman then threw home for the force on the runner from third, but threw it wildly, allowing the runner from third to score. But, when the runner on second stayed there, thinking it was a catch, the runner from first, knowing that it wasn't caught, saw his teammate there. Springfield tagged the runner from first, THEN Cruz called timeout. The tag on that runner was a legal out. Allowing the runner from third to return to third, then advance to home again to score actually resulted in an out. By rule, when a runner advances to the next base and touches it, he can't go back. He's out on appeal. When the play-by-play announcer half-jokingly said that, if he were Springfield, he'd have all bases touched by the defense, just to be safe, I laughed because it's true. Those actions would have resulted in no runs scoring and the inning would have been over, no matter whether the original call was a catch or not.

Yep. The line-out-catch for one, the "two players on one base" and associated tag for two, and the runner-to-home who didn't tag up for three. Although no Drifter ever actually _TAGGED a base,_ as far as I can tell. So if Wagner did return to third then trot to home during the confusion, but when the umps hadn't officially paused play, that would be the run. (You can go back more than one base to tag up - the only condition in the rules that prevents it is that at no point can you pass another runner, in either direction, and if a second player crosses home, a prior home-crossing-runner can no longer go back, since they would have to "pass" the second-player-in. Springfield absolutely should have done as suggested and "insurance tag every base" as soon as there was confusion. Just in case the line-out was called in their favor. (Which it appears wasn't the case.)
