Elvis Costello is a one-of-a-kind songwriter!

So many of Elvis' songs are more meaningful when performed solo, with only one or two instruments. This is a good example and so is "Accidents Will Happen."

Always loved this. Spent a lot of time in an Alzheimer’s facility, watching someone’s plight get dimmer everyday. Excellent phrasing in this song.

Most casual fans have no idea that this song which one could argue is his most commercial hit was actually co-written with Paul McCartney! In the late 80’s Paul’s then manager mentioned to him how well his caliber of songs were when he worked with a collaborative partner. That of course being John Lennon. So around 1987/1988 some names were tossed around as potential collaborators for Paul to work with. He of course ended up working with another fellow Liverpudlian Elvis Costello. This particular track was a co-write between the two. There are also some greatly joint written songs on both Paul’s solo albums Flowers in the dirt and the album off the ground. And if any of you are completist fans like myself: just google/youtube McCartney/declan macmanus the later name being costello’s real name and you will find a plethora of acoustic demos that they made around this time period. Nearly two albums worth. It’s a shame that only a handful of their amazing collaborations only trickled out here and there over just an album or two period for each of them. Would love to hear way more stuff by them!

They made a series of around a dozen demos together which were intended for a joint album that was never produced because they couldn't agree on how to produce it. You will find them on You Tube. They are the nearest thing I have heard to a new Beatle album. Magical.

Much much better song in this arrangement, fitting the melancholic lyrics. Never cared for the original that much, though the Spike album has grown on me. I feel like they were looking for a single and came to this one, turning into a pop arrangement for that purpose. But it's also possible he wanted to counter the weight of the lyrics with a more joyful sound. He's done that before. Oh how I miss later with Jools!

Let's not forget Sir Paul, who Elvis credits for smoothing out the chorus and making the bridge more dreamlike.

Oh yes, phenomenal for sure, but I'm gonna raise my hand and say it's arguably Reginald Dwight, closely followed by the much maligned and derided Philip Collins.

Why can't a man stand alone? Must he be burdened by all that he's taught to consider his own? His skin and his station, his kin and his crown His flag and his nation, they just weigh him down You know pride is a sin that we tend to forgive But it gets hard to live When you don't have the love in her heart to begin with Why can't a man stand alone? Why can't a woman be just what she seems? Must she be tarnished by men who can only be men in their dreams? When beauty meets ignorance, they shout in the street Repeating their offer to each girl they meet The respect that she needs, it isn't a gift But it gets hard to lift yourself up When you don't have the strength to begin with Why can't a woman stand alone? Why can't a baby sleep at night and dream of the time to come And never fear the world outside, the touch of someone very near? Why can't a man stand up? Why can't a man stand up? Why can't a man stand alone?
