Oh yes, phenomenal for sure, but I'm gonna raise my hand and say it's arguably Reginald Dwight, closely followed by the much maligned and derided Philip Collins.

Hard not to cry whenever I hear this. Reminds me of my dear auntie who passed away this year. I remember visiting her in the nursing home after the Alzheimer's took control. To see someone you love like that can only break your heart.

Thank you SO much for that, both my parents developed dementia, possibly Dad's due to (in his mind 'posh') alcohol but Mum went down HARD. I was staying at their place, so helped when I could. The worst part was when she KNEW it was happening. I've nursed and worked respite care in the community. Definitely sad and unfortunate... but when you just didn't know the backstory... It ripped me to pieces, away from them since my sister enacted POA and just packed them up and moved them out. (anxiety disorder, clinical depression PTSD...) But she didn't inform me. EVER. I'm not in it for the money, Mum used to joke 'money can't buy you happiness but it allows you to be miserable in comfort'! I have fought since I was 12 years old for my mental health issues. Dad never chlorinated his gene pool before breeding and Mum didn't know that much, isolated and with my Sister, glorious woman, having a fall onto a hard carpet. Nowt was thought. Until.... Intellectually disabled, a grand mal epileptic and the happiest person in my family. I'm old, you're only young once but you can be immature forever, but a hairdresser plucked out my first grey hair in my late teens. Stephanie has yet to sprout one! Long story but I pray she's happy.

I like this acoustic version better than the version that was a hit. The hit version made the song a poppy happy peppy little thing. This song has a lot of depth, a lot of sadness and a ton of pain. The acoustic version captures what the song really is about.

Thanks for the upload, love this song. By the time I was 5 all my dolls were named Veronica ___ , as in Veronica Marie, Veronica Louise, etc. Naturally, I wanted my Confirmation name to be Veronica instead of the patron saint for my birth date, which was the normal practice. My mother said I could only if I could find the name in the Bible. I didn't look in the Bible, but I knew it was in a book of Bible stories that we had so I showed her that and Veronica is my Confirmation name! LOL

In Holland we could receive radio Carolie also. I think our Radio Veronica was inspired by the things they did. Both stations operated in territorial waters and after the law was adapted they were doomed to die. By the many protests of the listeners our Radio Veronica got a place in the national broadcasting. By the way: in mean time I've seen 'The Boat That Rocked' : A must!
@mrubbish111 жыл бұрын
You are right the movie was about Radio Caroline. I believe several of the dj's went on to work with BBC radio 1 when it was set-up. Mainly transmitted to UK but of course some parts or Europe could receive this.
@mikethomas612011 ай бұрын
Most casual fans have no idea that this song which one could argue is his most commercial hit was actually co-written with Paul McCartney! In the late 80’s Paul’s then manager mentioned to him how well his caliber of songs were when he worked with a collaborative partner. That of course being John Lennon. So around 1987/1988 some names were tossed around as potential collaborators for Paul to work with. He of course ended up working with another fellow Liverpudlian Elvis Costello. This particular track was a co-write between the two. There are also some greatly joint written songs on both Paul’s solo albums Flowers in the dirt and the album off the ground. And if any of you are completist fans like myself: just google/youtube McCartney/declan macmanus the later name being costello’s real name and you will find a plethora of acoustic demos that they made around this time period. Nearly two albums worth. It’s a shame that only a handful of their amazing collaborations only trickled out here and there over just an album or two period for each of them. Would love to hear way more stuff by them!
@garyburn28065 ай бұрын
They made a series of around a dozen demos together which were intended for a joint album that was never produced because they couldn't agree on how to produce it. You will find them on You Tube. They are the nearest thing I have heard to a new Beatle album. Magical.

I always hated my name. Some of us are just never happy. lol So what to you think? Costello's music is pretty diverse and his voice is definitely different. I liked his early stuff, but never really got into him until an ex made me a tape (argh - dating myself) and I'd listen to it in the car on the long commute to work. Got rid of the ex and got some Costello CDs of my own. heheh

The fade outs are really annoying. I feel like it 23 clips pasted together. My mom has a habit of going to parties where she meets people and has no real idea of who they are. She went to one about 3 years ago and Elvis was on the piano. Were about 100 people there so she had a nice chat with him.

Much much better song in this arrangement, fitting the melancholic lyrics. Never cared for the original that much, though the Spike album has grown on me. I feel like they were looking for a single and came to this one, turning into a pop arrangement for that purpose. But it's also possible he wanted to counter the weight of the lyrics with a more joyful sound. He's done that before. Oh how I miss later with Jools!
