I do something similar. I insert flat steel in the hollow cross members and extend it out. But after watching a utube video the person attached 1/1/2 inch pvc and winched it up. He heated the pvc to form it down . And then he winched it. My better solution is I just inserted the pvc over the extended flat steel and I slide the kayak from the middle of it to the crossbars. Thank you. Now, is it possible without a rivet gun? BTW, there are plenty of pad eye and rivet packs available on amazon or alixpress -- trouble is most of them don't bother to explain you need a rivet gun.

For a boat like this standard pop rivets are fine. But for serious use on things like sea kayak hatches, etc. I prefer sealed rivets as they prevent seepage through the mandrel.

Great video, thanks for sharing. How does one determine where to attach pad eyes to the kayak? What are they best used for? Thanks.

I use the Rhino product, similar. Try trying a line from the bow of the boat and attaching it to the rear of the vehicle. This prevents the boat from sliding forward. Get the line just the right length, use a junk carabiner and attach that to the bow. Unclip right before lifting.

Howdy. Just purchased an old Scupper Classic and have been finding your resources extremely helpful. Did you just reuse the old rivet that you removed earlier, or were those new?

U don’t have to use bolt cutters to remove the pad eyes drill out the center with a 1/8 drill bit. Takes two seconds and you can reuse the pad eye.

Hi Tom. This video has really helped me with a project which I am working on with my new kayak. I do have a question about strap eyes and attachment points. I'm attempting to do something... unorthodox... with storing and transporting my kayak, and was wondering if you've ever seen someone attempt to hang a kayak via strap/pad eyes? If so, about how much load do you think that an evenly-distributed set of 6 pad eyes attached with tri-grip rivets could support? The weight of the whole kayak?
@boatman222345
@boatman222345 4 жыл бұрын
Not a good idea, particularly with plastic boats, as they provide very limited purchase an can lead to deformation of the deck. Just rig up a couple of web or rope loops to cradle the hanging kayak.

Please note, the seat back version above is an older style. Newer versions of the same seat back had nipples on the back side and were outfitted with a neoprene fabric slip cover (w/ logo printed on it). Under that slip cover was a layer of foam rubber glued the seat back structure. This later version seat back was found on newer Perception touring kayaks circa 2000-2004. Need help? call 6 Oh three 3 too 3 eight ZERO 9 O.

The silicone is used to seal the small gaps between the kayak hull, the deck fitting and the rivet head. Silicone is NOT put in or on the tool! However… Silicone does get on the rivet’s mandrill and as the mandrill is drawn up into the tool it carries wet silicone into the tool. This needs to be cleaned out, maybe every 100 rivets or so. It is Impossible to use washers inside a sit-on-top kayak in spaces where you Cannot Reach Inside with your hands. The rivets commonly used for kayak assembly do not need washers anyway. They spread out 3 legs inside the kayak, quite widely, and are not at all like pop rivets from the hardware store. This video is only a small part of the instructional information pages, and the many kayak parts, that are at Top Kayaker. Please visit the site to learn more and get details on these rivets and tools.

What on earth are you using silicone on the gun for?! Also,you should be using back up washers under that plastic.
