The silicone is used to seal the small gaps between the kayak hull, the deck fitting and the rivet head. Silicone is NOT put in or on the tool! However… Silicone does get on the rivet’s mandrill and as the mandrill is drawn up into the tool it carries wet silicone into the tool. This needs to be cleaned out, maybe every 100 rivets or so. It is Impossible to use washers inside a sit-on-top kayak in spaces where you Cannot Reach Inside with your hands. The rivets commonly used for kayak assembly do not need washers anyway. They spread out 3 legs inside the kayak, quite widely, and are not at all like pop rivets from the hardware store. What on earth are you using silicone on the gun for?! Also,you should be using back up washers under that plastic.

I'm really sure you can build it yourself. I did this 2 weeks ago thanks to the Woodglut plans.
