Just here because i looked up the therm "Yehudi lights" on military aircraft. Apparently, they reduced the silhouette signature and made it harder to detect. The catchy song caught on to this form of active camaflouge in WWII.Who'ssss yehudi?

Very personal beautiful and intimate playing of a type that doesn't exist any longer. I totally disagree with Flesch in his assessment of Zimbalist's playing. In our days of high tension playing, it is wonderful to hear such a relaxed performance.

...been listening to the Sirius XM 40s channel, 40s Junction and heard this for the first time a few weeks ago...born in 1949 - grew up in the 50s watching TV with mom & dad and hearing/seeing the 40s era stars on the variety shows they loved to watch...

@chaspoll1 I completely agree (his recording of the Ravel Trio is IMHO the most beautiful overall), and I've been thinking about this. I think one thing is that Ginette Neveu came along, who made all others seem like well-meaning amators. I've also seen Merckel was not liked as a concertmaster by his players (he must have been demanding, but hey!), not sure whether true or just a rumor.

I have the de Bavier recordings and have posted them on KZbin. Please search. I don't think they are quite as fine as this performance, though.

@2nd violinist: You say "As much as I like him, he wasn't really on the level of the better classical violinists of his time" I discovered South and Grappelli in my teens in the fifties. They find the swing in Bach which most others and betters are sadly lacking, in this important respect not being on South/Grapellis level.

Very sad piece, almost as if it was reflecting the sad faith of Jews in Germany and his daughter Alma who was also a violinist and had her own orchestra in Vienna. After she was arrested by the Gestapo she was made a leader of orchestra in Birkenau playing next to the crematorium. Let their souls rest in peace.

Last photograph is of "The Pianist" - Wladyslaw Szpilman. The person sitting next to him seems to be Artur Balsam, but I can't be sure. Thanks for posting, and thanks to Bryan Bishop. The transfer is indeed excellent!
