Can you show us how you teach in the class? How long is the course? WOuld it take you from knowing nothing to being knowledgable to play in church? Thank you.
@WilliamJohnsonmusic12 күн бұрын
Great question and very helpful feedback! I do start from the very beginning. For this particular class however it helps to have a little bit of rhythmic knowledge or experience as I talk about different note values such as eighth notes and sixteenth notes (although I do elaborate on it a little). I will be posting a few clips this week and next of the course to help elaborate. It also comes with a free 30 minute lesson with me.

Fantastic demonstration. Out of curiosity, what’s the reason you don’t prefer those terms to describe some percussion instruments?
@WilliamJohnsonmusicАй бұрын
Thank you! In many cases I am just biased towards percussion that’s not the drumset. That being said, to call it “auxiliary” often refers to supplemental, supporting, or “minor” percussion. Depending on the arrangement this may be the case however in many songs the “auxiliary” percussion parts may be the tone and rhythmic elements that distinguish/characterize the song. When this happens I am not always convinced them that it’s auxiliary… especially if without it the song loses some of it’s pulse or character. I am also not sure it always is the most respectful title for the one performing it.

@@WilliamJohnsonmusicThat makes a lot of sense. I was looking for different kinds of shakers and similar sounds to that for a chamber piece I was working on where one of the percussionists would be switching between a couple of different shakers and was really pleased with this demo. Thank you very much

I am glad the video was useful! A chamber piece?! Oh! I am intrigued. I would love to know more.

Sandhills Botanical Garden in central North Carolina. It is no longer there. These are temporary structures that are meant to only last for a couple years.

Sorry, I responded with another account. It is the Sandhills Botanical Garden. The structure is by Michael Daughtry I believe. It is no longer there as these are made to last a couple years. He travels around the world to build these structures.

I am 62 and I am a struggling musician. I have tried several instruments. I can’t get past the first two days. It’s a mental block. I recently bought my second set of Bargos. I am in a better place now. I’ve been looking at different videos, kind of got stale and then I stumbled upon you. Glad I did. Hope you are well.

Im a professional drummer and I just started to play percussion (congas in particulary). Im so happy to find a guy who thinks like me in term of "how to learn". You were very fluid in your video and I love your way of learning and your vibe 😉 Congrats, I follow you for my learning for Congas 👍 Thank you

Very nice video, i am actually from mauritius, island off the eastern coast of africa,just next to reunion island. Please, Mauritania is a big country in west Africa, but in yr video,at 2:57, you are talking about Mauritius,not Mauritania. Here in mauritius, this instrument is called a Maravann, and in Reunion island, they call it Kayamb. My partner happens to build this instrument using traditional method, we use sugar cane flower stem and cana flower seeds inside.

Thank you for the information! I pinned your comment. I will make a new video highlighting it as well. Feel free to comment here below or email me at [email protected] If you’re partner is interested he can send me one of his instruments and I would be happy to feature it in a video

Some good concepts about playing in context! The king of pocket percussion and unobtrusively locking in with a groove? Ralph Macdonald. Also from the Wailers- Alvin “Seeco” Patterson. I call him the “Ringo of percussion.” He often didn’t play much, technically speaking; it was just *always perfect for the song.*
