If you do pop/rock, the 8th note pattern on the bow of the ride is the most common.

I bought a used 5 piece that was missing one of the toms. I found 2 more toms for $25 so ended up having those shipped here. Never played before, so might put some of it in the closet and start with the smaller kit, I'm in a small apartment anyway so it might help, but would like to eventually convert the one into a second floor tom. Who knows maybe I'll like this more than guitar and sell all my amps and guitars and stick with drums and keyboard then I'd have a lot more room for the drums. We'll see where this year takes me. 😂

The trend i hate the worst is this "my 10 year drumming progress" crap where they show all stages in one day. Instead of giving us actual footage of them from 10 years ago. So essentially theyre just making up what 10 years ago might have sounded like

Both Istanbul companies have an unlathed series called "Turk". And they're amazing! Theyre not absurdly dry. Just darker. My crash has insane tone and cut. And the china is still cutting without being brash and abrasive in a small room

"Incels" lol. The only people who have time to woodshop and post grooves are young adults or dads.......the kids will get laid because they play an instrument and have actual talents. The dads well.......we probably wish we could be incels tbh 😂😂😂 TLDR - drummers get laid. Learn an instrument, learn to play any keys besides WASD or QWER.

Out of curiosity, what type of subdivisions do you use on your metronome when you play these exercises? Also, same question for your general playing: do you use the same subdivisions or do you tailor it to what you plan to be playing?

I like the Drumeo thing. I sometimes wonder about a specific drummer not having heard a rather famous song. But really, musicians can just as easily find themselves siloed into a particular area of focus, as anybody else can. It's not that hard to believe.

Even though i already commented, i have to say another trend that needs to go away is overly large cymbals. There's a reason 14" hi hats and 20" rides have been the staple for so long, they fit in the mix. 15" hi hats can be great (my fav recording hats right now are 15" meinl foundry reserves), 22" rides are cool, but these massive 17" hats and 24-26" rides IMO are useless because they often get completely lost in the mix. They might be good for very specific recordings, but overall they're usually way too low pitched and easily get frequency masked by other instruments in the mix. From a mixing/production standpoint, the majority of cymbal frequencies should be sitting above most of the rest of the frequencies coming from other instruments in the mix. Oversized cymbals conflict a lot IME with the rest of the instruments in a mix. Plus the price on those big pies are egregious.
@brettclurdrums
@brettclurdrums 10 күн бұрын
I get this. They tend to fit well in current contemporary worship music. But that's a very niche sound. I love my 15" hats, but I often wished I had 14" ones

What's wrong with using a Roland SPD-S or equivalent over a clap stack? You can load more sounds and it has 9 different playing surfaces. Much more versatile and space efficient than a clap stack imo.
@brettclurdrums
@brettclurdrums 11 күн бұрын
That's true. I guess it's just nice for some drummers to just have cymbals to do the job and not worry about electronics. Hybrid setups definitely make you more versatile though. Which is also weird, because majority of pro drummers need hybrid setups, so they end up using clapstacks AND SPDs
@MalikEmmanuel
@MalikEmmanuel 8 күн бұрын
Off the top of my head I can come up with a few good reasons why someone would use a clap stack. There are some situations where a clap stack can sound better than an electronic clap. The stack can be more responsive to touch and stick placement making it more versatile. Not having to take extra gear, cables and possibly a speaker to a gig. Having person control over key parts of your sound, rather than giving it to the sound guy.

My biggest problem right now is that I can play 32nd note written stuff consistently but I cant improvise there yet. Like, I can sit down and learn a 32nd groove and then have it in muscle memory later but I can't flow around the kit freely because for example my left foot is not up when I want to play a HiHat bark and then it messes up my balance and I fall off the click. Know what I mean?

Before I watch I hope to see thees drumming trends die 1. Angling the cymbals away from you 2. Rack toms getting smaller as they go L - R not bigger. 3. Constant linear fills for the whole song. ...proceed.

I think a lot of drummers that use clap stacks use them poorly. I mean, no rules and all that, but to my ears the clap stack thing is really annoying to hear most times. A dry "thwack" out of place in a song just sounds bad to me. They aren't versatile at all either.
