To test that battery, of course, disconnect the A/C for at least 20 minutes, come back and test the battery voltage under full load. If it seems low, like in this video, it's done. 4 years is enough time but yeah 5 years is about right. to die. The system should be carefully inspected long before that and a new battery is a good idea anyway. Cost price is minimal and a specific service call can be expensive for the client. In huge installations, I changed them all at them at same time. Surprisingly, those batteries can hold up the system for very long times without power. More than a day, maybe a week? Just pulling the battery out and using a meter is never going to mean a thing. It will always 'show' good. They are nothing like Alkaline, AA's DSC panels are incredibly reliable and can take a direct hit of lightning. HONEST! They get up, dust themselves off and reset just fine. Not so much for the other stuff in the house. Too Bad. Got insurance? The most wonderful iconic panel is the DSC PC-3000. I am confident many of these are still in service even 35 years later, I always soldered all my splices with a 'Bic lighter' and used 'B Connecters' when they became available. B for 'Bell'. Compact Heat Shrink is better for windows. The house is going to be around a long time and the Alarm should never be a problem. Reed switches can get 'sticky' so all contacts need to be carefully tested after time they don't show much high resistance but more than a tenth of an ohm? Forget it. It's done. These panels began with the DSC PC 2000 in 1988. This was a primitive transistorized prototype that sold like mad for one year to be replaced with the PC2500, far better and fully keypad programable. No have to burn a chip. There was also the four zone PC1000 that introduced full keypad programming but really caught installers and service people totally off guard. 'Uh oh, I don't know this one" For such a tiny simple panel it required a whole new way of learning. Long before wireless Revolutionary stuff indeed and far ahead of any competition like Ademco and Napco. DSC was made in Downsview, The North part of Toronto Ontario in Canada. In respect for the 16 zone PC-3000. For it's time, this panel could offer so much for everyone that the company had trouble interesting anyone with it's newer products. It was like the Elvis Presley of Alarm panels. It left al competitors in the dust. The other panels were kind of nice but were much more expensive. Ademco got way better than it's older stuff and made itself a valid option to DSC but very different and fun to work with as they worked very well wireless, at less cost than an ITI SX-V

well done. the same proceedure works on older DSC alarms like the 1550 and 1555. press *2, and if it lights up the #1LED, its a battery condition alarm.

Do you need to do anything on the control panel before actually changing the battery? Or is just changing it enough?

When I press *2 to determine trouble number, no number shows up, just the rapid flashing yellow trouble triangle. What would that mean?

Thank you for explaining that the battery's life is 3-5 years where most security companies failed to explain or highlight. I bought my replacement from Lowe's, they have it on stock.

In Houston, DSC sucks. I hated having to clip all the trash they left in the walls that do nothing and all the cable just sitting in the housing...lol

Very good presentation and very easy to understand. However, the standing voltage of the idle battery should be measured with one of the leads disconnected. Measure the charging voltage by removing both battery leads and reading the voltage on the hanging leads. Very good as what you did was perfect for the average home owner and will save them a lot of money. Cost of repairs here in Canada would be a minimum of 1 hr. labour at $85 + the cost of the battery plus taxes. Good job.

Thank you that was very informative. What about changing the battery in the external siren, does the trouble yellow light go off after you change the battery in the siren? I did follow the depassivating procedure and the trouble light is still on!!! Help.

Very detailed and well done video. My question is it possible to get an intermittent buzzing sound lasting for about 5 seconds from the DSC control panel before or without a trouble indicator at the keypad panel. Battery voltage measures mid range of its stated values but years of service is about 5 years.

I did replace the battery over 5 years ago, exactly like you explained. Now the yellow LED light turned on again. Checking the battery voltage, it reads 13.78 V, which is within the "Standby Use" spec but slightly out of the "Cyclic Use" range [14.5-14.9]. The battery also states "Replace every 3-5 years". I will give a try to replace it. Thanks.
