I’ve had the Sony a7 iii since it first came out and I bought another this year (2024) as a second camera and they both work great. I have been wanting the a9 for so long. I will get it one day.

Class. This was really helpful. You can definitely see the difference when you jumped to s-log3, but I think mainly that's mainly because they're side-by-side. Even the PP4 earlier ones looked great, but as you say it's about getting that consistency across both photography and videography. Thanks again, great work 👍

@@RaySawyerPhoto 100%. Do you mind me asking mate, are you using s-log to capture these or getting by with normal/s-cinetone? I'd love to see a video of you explaining your set-up for hybrid with the Sony a7IV, the picture profiles used (or not), whether you use ND filters, how strict you are with the shutter speed 180 rule, etc. The quality of your video coverage is a good few notches above that which I see being produced by most hybrid shooters.

How does one live with light flicker? Im worried about it ruinning shots i can't miss.
@RaySawyerPhoto
@RaySawyerPhoto Ай бұрын
The A9 deals with flicker great due to the stacked sensor. Just sometimes with shot lighting you can see exposure changes from frame to frame. Get this with almost all cameras with really bad lights. Doesn’t happen often though. Only a global shutter like the A9III eliminates it completely. I wouldn’t worry

Currently shoot mostly sports still and some KZbin videos with two Canon R6 Mii’s. Thinking about picking up a used A9 for sports to see if I want to move to Sony. Then might pick up a A7Riv for landscape. Am I crazy or on the right track with switching to Sony?
@RaySawyerPhoto
@RaySawyerPhoto 2 ай бұрын
They all great cameras. Costly switching if you have canon glass etc. A9 is a sports camera so pretty cool. I guess the question is does the canon not do what you want it to do for sports and you have the answer. Before making a costly switch maybe try an A9 first to make sure it’s right for you.
@perkristoffersson4153
@perkristoffersson4153 Ай бұрын
I'd say you're crazy but might be worth trying just the same because a used A9 is way less than an R3. But then lenses come into play as well, unless you're already using EF gear. I'm assuming you're thinking A7RIV because of resolution, given that's pretty much what it brings to the table. Why not a used GFX100s?
@TimDillardPhotography
@TimDillardPhotography Ай бұрын
@@perkristoffersson4153 not opposed to picking up another Fuji at some point but for an entire eco system change, for me, only Sony is worth considering at this time. I am definitely crazy because I have all RF glass, but at the same time, Sony has so many 3rd party lenses available and their G masters are amazing. I think to ease into Sony I should pick up an A6400, 6600 or maybe even a 6700. Then I’d probably pick up one of two inexpensive lenses from either Viltrox or Sigma. While I’d love to dive into to two Sony: that fit my primary use case like an A9iii and a A7RV, that’s not feasible. I don’t have a small travel apsc and I’d like to get another. I’m one of those guys who sees the value, purpose and use case scenario for both full frame and apsc. I prefer to have both but don’t currently because I’ve sold my R7 and my last two fujis. We shall see. Trying to move slow and not suffer not get into a gear acquisition syndrome mind state again. And now, Rumors of Canon introducing a retro A1 throwback next year are swirling, so I definitely should hold on the Canon for now.

I’m primarily a portrait photographer (dynamic flash, in particular). I know the a9 is moreover an electronic shutter powerhouse. How does that affect shooting with strobes? I’m really wanting to take advantage of the correlation of strobes with super high shutter speeds, but wasn’t sure if that would pose any problems.

How would you spend 1700-2000€ if you wanted a camera for starting to get serious about both photos and videos (including 1 or 2 basic lenses)? Currently I'm not sure between the Sony a7 iii (body 1000-1200€ used) and the Sony a6700 (body 1350 - 1400€ used). The a6700 is tempting despite being an aps-c, because of 4k 120 and all the newest AI-AF features; on the other end, the a7 iii is one of the few full-frames I can afford, considering the price of full-frame lenses. Do you think that beginning with a full-frame is more important than beginning with an high-end aps-c? Like if you want to do some photos and videos in your trips or in events? Thank you if you read this.
@RaySawyerPhoto
@RaySawyerPhoto 5 ай бұрын
It’s always your decision. You will know in your gut what you want to go with. Full frame is great but not big deal starting on aps-c cameras. Just have to look at Fuji shooters. Lovely photos and video out of them. John branch for example shoots Fuji and they are all crop sensor. Do what’s best for your budget. Once you’re good at the craft. The gear matters less and less.

I just bought an a9 with a mere 28k on the actual shutter and paired it with the 70-200mm II lens. Holy cow was that a killer investment. I have an a7r II that's been my main since going to it from the a6300, but I needed some speed for shooting my grandson's sporting events and other hobbies. I'm blown away by how capable that beast is, and the focus system over the r2 is night and day. Now I've got to jump to an r4 I think and I'll have an amazing setup. The A9 is absolutely fantastic today for people shooting actual pix and not needing hybrid.

Hey Ray! Sorry to hear about the recording. I imagine that’s super frustrating especially given the recent challenges with views. While I’m no expert on youtube content i do consider myself a huge content consumer and wanted to provide some thoughts. I’m a huge fan of your work and overall vibe. I particularly enjoy the content where you speak about certain topics in the wedding photography space (if whether to include an engagement session in packages or not, how you got featured on publications, etc.) and sharing general tips on being a better photographer/ small business owner. I enjoy your take on things and find your insight helpful. I haven’t been watching the recent editing content because i spend a lot less time in Lightroom these days because of Imagen AI doing the heavy lifting. I was actually looking forward to this video because i enjoy content about using specific software and general tech to improve photography workflow. Your recent video on the latest lightroom AI update was also really good imo. i appreciated you taking a “learn with me” approach. It helped me learn about the topic way faster and the length of the video was perfect in my opinion. Anyways, i say all this because i’d love to keep watching your content though i haven’t found the recent videos all that enticing. I’m just one person sharing my perspective, but maybe others can agree as i’m sure many may disagree. Again, big fan of your work and your content has proven to be very helpful. I hope this helps or at least minimizes some frustration. Sent with love from USA <3
