Very true, but based on what I've seen so far, this also has a lot more participants, so I suppose it's a tradeoff.

Most people make their own, or at the very least, modify what is sold to them. It's a good idea to start with cheap plastic and cord, because it's easy to fix. From there, you find out what style you like and start getting more authentic with time. Today I fight in Chain because I love the look and feel, but I too started out in a plastic covered in a tunic.

It's a rare system in that your opponent gets to chose when they are dead. The idea is we are armored up with leather limbs, chain mail body and metal, open faced helm. Also to note SCA (which sponsors or are the driving force behind these big fights) are a honourble bunch. You most often are not allowed to be part of the fighting community if you do not behave by the rules and don'r rhino(the act of not acknowledge a good hit when it is, also don't "piss them off"(sort of impossible but irritated) by rhinoing... some of them can bend 2mm steel plate with one solid hit with a rattan stick(bamboo more or less.)

They do, At least those who wears distinct uniform colours do. There's not much room to manouver than hold the line from charges and push when the opportunity arises. If you want formations you must go to the open field battles, this was a pass battle (walls on either side that stops you from circling around)

Did you go to a fighter practice? Nearly every active group has one that meets weekly and they are open to anyone who's curious. Also don't judge a book by it's cover, some of the best fighters I've ever faced are significantly overweight old dudes.
