Its an honor based system with the hands and area from the knee down as the only area we don't strike. Force levels vary, but after a little bit of training you'll get a feel for acceptable. Pain tolerance and skill can dictate some of the armor you wear, but there are minimums in place for safety. At about 7 minutes in you an see a squire lay into someone with a two handed weapon. You can get an idea of how hard he's swinging just by listening to the impacts.

@TheLoneOnion The group is the SCA, you can go to the website, sca.org and find your local group. Rattan can be purchased at several places, but Ice Falcon Armoury is where i get most of mine. He sales only SCA thickness Rattan. Armour is another story altogether, you will have to find out your local kingdoms rules for minimum armour requirements. But its not to different from the society as a whole. Good luck, and have fun!
@RookRiot111 жыл бұрын
Adrian empire has steel weapon fighting, and thrusting (with appropriately modified weapons AKA a thrusting cap) they also do not allow the "football grill" style visors on helmets, no openings can be greater than 3/4 inch in any direction on the helm. the rest of the armor standards are similar to the SCA. Less iron chicken fighting too.

@Evanmander8 жыл бұрын
It's a rare system in that your opponent gets to chose when they are dead. The idea is we are armored up with leather limbs, chain mail body and metal, open faced helm. A shot that is hard enough to penetrate those things is enough to 'kill' you, and you are honor bound to take the shot gracefully.

Why doesn't anybody fight in formations?
@MrEmiosk10 жыл бұрын
They do, At least those who wears distinct uniform colours do. There's not much room to manouver than hold the line from charges and push when the opportunity arises. If you want formations you must go to the open field battles, this was a pass battle (walls on either side that stops you from circling around)
@pyrrhus179 жыл бұрын
thanks anybody use roman formation tactics
@FlipsyFiona13 жыл бұрын
Rofl that is definitely a tiger head on top of a spear. Best spear ever.
@markrcca532910 жыл бұрын
I guess with a "Pass" battle, there is little room for flanking maneuvers. An attrition battle, each line grinding down the other. It comes down to skill and endurance of individual fighters. The armchair general in me says: this scenario would benefit from a Roman legion tactic, where each man in front is frequently replaced by those behind him, while he goes into the back to rest. The shield wall is very effective, since the shield can't be destroyed, unlike real war :), but I seems spearmen in this video couldn't take advantage of their own shield wall, as their spears weren't long enough. They should be able to thrust over their shield wall, and at an angle, rather than just straight ahead.
@capitalistraven10 жыл бұрын
We have rules limiting how long spears can be for safety reasons. The ones used here top out at 9' which is about what was used during the early middle ages. The real issue is that everyone knows how long the spears are so the shield wall forms just outside the range of the spears to make it difficult to reach over, which is still an issue whether you have 9' or 20' spears. Some units do use legion tactics but the line turns very dynamic in a somewhat open front battle like this one where you have to move the line quickly to meet with areas where the enemy has broken through on one side or another.

If I am correct, if the SCA used metal weapons, dull or not, the blows would be hard enough to kill or maim, even though they have all the armor.

I wonder if you could like use bows with arrows of plastic or like a sock full of sand at the tip area, that'd be awesome seeing a shadow of arrows come and having to raise your shield, and if you got hit you'd be out, and it'd be at the start where all the archers lay down there main weapon and get 2 arrows to fire, one side fires there's, the other, then the same side again, and then the other, and then the battle would start up with them charging.
@Saturnice0111 жыл бұрын
There are quite a few aggressive fighters, jumping out from the line to rush into the opposing force. Many of them got "killed".
@landmine2111 жыл бұрын
Yea people do that. They're called corpses. It's in their best interest to stay calm and collective, form a shield wall to protect ally pikemen that in turn, pick off the enemy. It's teamwork. I've been playing for a little over a year, and there are times to shield charge through, but its never at the beginning. :)

soo what are the rules on death for these kind of battles? when you feel it? or certain area's of contact?
@MrMorphine48211 жыл бұрын
That being said, a steady march in formation towards the enemy would seem to be tactically sound - you have spearmen that are holding lines admirably, but they aren't advancing, and overall the guys aren't moving particularly fast. Endurance is a factor yes, it's summer and y'all are in quilted plate and chain, but initiative (taking it and holding it) is crucial...and I'm honestly not seeing it happening save for the guy in black and white at 4:58.
@sijar112 жыл бұрын
that spear line is just waiting to be cleared up by a good combat acher. i just see a few xbowmen though they are hanging back standing around, there are openings to be shooting through, just stand go near the front, on the side of the unit or at the 2nd or 3rd line and take shots at those giant spearmen targets. why do i just see xbow men and xbow bolts? you can shoot much faster with a bow.

Most people make their own, or at the very least, modify what is sold to them. It's a good idea to start with cheap plastic and cord, because it's easy to fix. From there, you find out what style you like and start getting more authentic with time. Today I fight in Chain because I love the look and feel, but I too started out in a plastic covered in a tunic.

That protective gear would do you no good if you rush in. All somebody needs to do is thrust a spear at you, a solid hit would pierce your armour, probably wounding you, which in turn would lead to weaker defense on your side and receiving more hits. If you just ruch in you'd hardly survive for long...
@Saturnice0112 жыл бұрын
I never said they do use them, I said IF. Emphasis on if. The point of my comment was to say that if the SCA were to use steel weapons, they would maim someone if they were stabbed of hit in the neck.

SCA uses rattan weapons so they won't splinter when we bash people as hard as possible in the head, we don't however allow grappling and other forms of fighting. This is because of that rattan part I just said, no one wants a stick into the hands, or to slip their fingers in between two shields. If you want live steel, try the ARMA, they do some decent martial arts, but slower due to usage of steel weaponry. But they don't do tournaments because they lack some rules the SCA has.

Becuse Pennsic is not a strict medieval gathering, it is originaly a fantasy larpy kinda thing, it is just that the majority are sca heavy fighters and knights... One of swedens knights fought in the pennsic and guess what he wents up against. Think conan the barbarian without the muscle and only the bare minimum allowed armor,

I'm an European reenactor, i know SCA from armour books and other. Looks strange to me, i suppose Americans have this kind of events because it's too difficult for them to focus on a single period of many countrys that have made the history of wester medieval world. The fight looks good but too many armours from different times and fancifull equipments breaks the "magic illusion" of watching a medieval battle.
