Nice choice of moody, mournful music, which is respectful of the sadness of the abandoned part of Trona.

Didn't the lake go all the way up to Bishop in the old days? I didn't even think there was a lake anymore since LA drained it... I'd like to see where the old lake was in an overlay of what is there today. Cheers!

Owens Lake extents are shown in the video beginning about 1:00 min. The exhibit shows the lake level and extents around 1905 before the LADWP took the water. There is now modern record showing the lake to Bishop.

Great video and great music -- We lost the towns of Warland, Tweed, Ural, Volcour, and Yarnell when they built the Libby Dam on the Kootenai River in northwest Montana back in the late 60's early 70's -- One day, if Lake Koocanusa ever draws down to a critical point behind the Libby Dam I'd like to go see the towns we lost in 1972. I think it would be pretty exciting to see the towns I haven't seen since I was 12. On a good day, when you're out in a boat on Lake Koocanusa, looking through the bottom of a Mason jar, you can see the train trestle at the bottom of the lake at Warland.

Great video! We stay at boulder creek twice a year. I always imagine what that area would be like now if Mulholland aqueduct didn't exist and LA water didn't own so much of the land. Briggs Cabin is amazing for anyone wanting to explore off the path! Whitney Portal is great when the summer heat arrives. Enjoy your adventures and safe travels!

5th generation Californian here...new subscriber. Well schooled on the water wars of our history. Dad born in 1918 travelled The Fruit Trail from Dates in Indio Oranges in Anaheim all the way to Olives in Olivehurst Ca in the 1920s thru the Great Depression. I have a question that you might be able to answer...I was Hwy 50 east of Nevada west of Salt Lake City and I stumbled upon a Reservoir... would you know the name of it? I was driving Eastbound and a Bald Eagle flew right over the cab of my F-250 . I pulled over and walked over a little bluff and to my surprise there was a big reservoir that I couldn't see from my truck. Anyway to my surprise there were no less than 100 Bald Eagles standing on the shore! I always wondered the name... anyway I really enjoy your channel and narration...well done. Thanks. Eric Underwood Class of 81 Downey High school Downey California ♥️🇺🇲🙏🗽 Edit: My Dads cousin lived at Eagle Mountain mining town

Thanks for subscribing. The only reservoir that I am aware of along Hwy 50 in that area is Sevier Lake. If this is the place it is the terminal point of the Sevier River in Utah. The river has no outlet. This is a 400-mile river that begins west of Bryce Canyon. Depending on the precipitation for any given year, this lake can be dry. Glad you liked the video. Thanks again.

Thank you for the respectful way in which you get to know these towns! My dad told me that his grandparents saw Los Angeles play political hardball, lots of dirty tricks and just plain illegal power moves to prevent the area from fighting back. He said that bank regulators watched the banks very closely, and once figured out that the reserve cash on hand was below the federally required minimum and had the bank immediately shut down so that everybody’s money was impounded for an extended period. Was that Mark Watson‘s bank? I don’t know, but I can certainly understand why they were so angry.

I am not sure about the bank thing. But this sounds like it could very well have been the case. Thanks for sharing the information.

Thanks for putting in the time to research these places and to share your terrific pictures, information and thoughts. Thanks for all your work researching this area. As a once upon a time active dirt biker, and working with a club that ran such events in this area, this greatly enriches my appreciation of those before me. Even went to dance at the Silver Dollar and also had a cold one at a tavern in Red Mountain during a break from our hot and dusty ride.

I wish I had a dollar for every time the buds and I drove thur Red Mt. On the way to Mammoth/June Lake. The standing joke was if you moved there the locals would give an old beat up 52 Chevy on blocks, a toilet for a flower pot and a big glass jar for brewing sun tea on the roof.

I grew up in the area. Hiked all over the hills worked in many of the homes. It is a nice area, but the one thing that drove me nuts watching your video was the pronunciation of Johannesburg. The (J) is not silent. me and that you kept mispronunciation the Johannesburg I could not stand to watch the rest of your video. If you make a documentary the name of the place that you’re talking about correctly please. Do you have a nice day God bless.

Was Slim 86 or 79 when he died? His plaque shows his dates as 1889-1968.
@GhostTownWonders21 күн бұрын
You are correct. His plaque says he was 79. However, upon further research he passed at the age of 78. He was born in October 1889 and died Aug. 1968 not making it to his birthdate. I said 86 years of age in the video. Good catch. That is incorrect. I got that information (aged 86) from a newspaper article written by a staff writer from the LA Times covering his death in Aug. 1968. That article shows up in my video as well.

The two main causes of so many California desert ghost towns - the boom-and-bust cycle of mining where when the mine closes the town's economy isn't diversifed enough to sustain it, and Los Angeles' insatiable thirst - which is also the reason why it has so many suburban communities within city limits to where the San Fernando Valley has been called "the New Jersey of LA" but for the most part it *IS* LA.

First time there was in 1957, must say this is one of the finest restoration accomplishments by any state organization in California…My only complaint is removing the cracked window that was repaired with two small boards and a bolt on the Main Street.

Good video! I always enjoy your work. It is always so detail oriented. I do wish you would spend more time filming the mines themselves, as they stand today. You don't have much geologic experience, but some of us do, and even if you just spend a few moments filming the waste rock piles (with closeups) and rock details (again, with closeups) at the borders of the portals, that gives some of us a pretty good idea of the geology behind what they were excavating. And, everything you are reporting on was primarily geology driven. Anyway, great video!
