This is still one of my favourite films. Bette made the role of Margo Channing her own, it’s impossible to imagine how Claudette Colbert or anyone else could have played the part. Anne Baxter was great in the part of Eve because you really didn’t see her coming but she did NOT ruin Bette’s chance of winning the Oscar, Gloria Swanson was a strong contender and Judy Holliday and Born Yesterday fitted the Zeitgeist of the time and her win did not shock people at the time. In the end, Oscar’s are irrelevant, so many Oscar winning roles are now forgotten but Bette’s Margo Channing and indeed Gloria’s Norma Desmond are still very much alive

Interesting sad note: Three of the players in this picture, Marilyn Monroe, George Sanders, and Barbara Bates, all committed suicide - although there is some speculation about MM's death. It is rather strange that many of the lead players in the most famous films committed suicide or met tragic ends. Vivien Leigh, James Dean, and Natalie Wood come to mind, but there are quite a few others.

Small error - When Addison slaps Eve, the sound is slightly delayed. Neuman's theme is excellent.

I think most actors found it more difficult to attain roles as they grew older if they were known for looks in youth. The subtext here is just an anecdotal slotting in of the odious feminist subtext by somebody else. Films were still at a very young stage, the first talkies were not even until 1929, so the feminist pandering is nonsense. Nobody KNEW at the time how things would pan out in the long term. All About Eve was refreshing because it portrayed female nature as it can be. It was REAL. Interesting to note, that also in the 1950s much older actresses like Margaret Rutherford were flourishing. Feminist ideology is NOT reality. Thank heavens for the modern day likes of Professor Janice Fiamengo. It's one of my favourite films ever, by the way. It just doesn't need the feminist rubbish about 'poor, poor women'.

There are very few movies about which it can be said that the casting was perfect. 'All About Eve' is one of these. George Sanders' wonderfully feline and cynical performance as Addison DeWitt was the only one recognised at the Oscars in the acting categories, and it is still the one I most enjoy.

Why was an owl used for the Haunted Forest scene? I ask because owls in later Disney cartoon movies (Bambi, Sleeping Beauty, and The Fox and the Hound) served as a friend to the main character.

According to the commentary on the Blu-ray, the owl was the first thing to scare her as she ran in the forest. After that, her imagination got the better of her and she was just seeing things.

Just revisiting film because I needed to hear "I ran all the way" also 'fascine your seatbelts it's going to be a bumpy night' for those who remember Bette Davis Eyes .... and will watch this doc but I do remember besides all the rest the chilling impression that Anne Baxter gave after watching an interview with her that she was scarily close to the sociopath she portrayed and feeling sorrow that George Sanders committed suicide and that his character although iniitially appearing as a kind of Mephisophes sp was appalled at what he had aligned himself with and as the narrator I think is the conscience of this great film which stands the test of time despite difference in acting styles etc. definitely still relevant today only have to listen to Sheryl Crow and Stevie Nicks duet to muse on the challenges of women in challenging endeavours and how far we have come and still need to go to find solace and friendship amongst our tribal loyalties and prejudgements we all have. Whew! Longest sentence I ever wrote. Reason why editing so important!!!! :)

Look, I want to start off by saying that I ADORE the late Anne Baxter, and I cherish the later Bette Davis as a National Treasure, but I actually UNDERSTAND why it was that Anne did not want to pursue the Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Here's why. She had only recently won Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her supporting role in the film the Razor's Edge. She shown, she radiated in that film--even though her role was very small. Winning that award had to have given her the night of her life up to that point. In All About Eve, Anne was playing the role of the Title character so that in itself was a major reason to think of her role as the Leading Actress Oscar contender. In normal days that would have been a given. The problem was, All About Eve was not a film from the 'normal days' because Bette Davis was in it. Bette who had given so many Oscar nominated performances (many of which she should have won for--Dark Victory, Now, Voyager, Of Human Bondage, and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?) was a BLAZING star. In those days the mere IDEA that a Star of such MAGNITUDE could be in a supporting role (which Margo most certainly was--simply because it was Eve's name in the film's title) was not only unheard of, it would have been UNNATURAL. So, no matter how great in the role she was--and she was GREAT--Anne should have realized that because of all those other factors (yes, I know she was trying to step up into STARRING roles and this Oscar would have helped her do that) she should have simply taken the nomination for Best Supporting Actress--which she would have won--making her a two time Oscar winner. Miss Davis would have secured her 3 for Best Actress, and that added luster to her crown would undoubtedly have aided her in securing the Oscar for Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?.

I don't think 'Margo Channing' is a supporting character in _All About Eve._ Also, the title character is not often the protagonist. _The Wizard of Oz_ (1939) and _Beetlejuice_ (1988) are two examples off the top of my head. And sometimes the title character is not even in the film at all, like in _Rebecca_ (1940).
@WilAdams
@WilAdams Жыл бұрын
@@musicaltheatergeek79 You have a point as far as it goes, but it only goes so far. Each of the ones you listed are exceptions and not the rule. For example, there can be no doubt that Sister Kenny is the lead in the film Sister Kenny. Auntie Mame in her film, Carrie in her film, even the Coal Miner's Daughter (who's actual name is Loretta, although the film's title comes from her nick-name) are all leading roles. Speaking of Carrie, that film presented the same situation for Sissy and Piper. While' clearly the mother was the supporting role, like Margo she stole nearly every scene she was in--the one exception is when Carrie pushes her down onto the bed, but even then, as she lay there--after Carrie had gone--she recaptured focus by utter the line 'Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live'. That was the Mrs. White turning point. She went from being an overbearing mother to avenging angel of God. Good film.
