Hi, watching this episode and also remembering previous comments about the ENORMOUS swell I would like to share my 2 penny's worth. Open ocean sailing will almost always have swell and often of the extent that you experience or worse. One basic mistake that you make on this particular trip is not enough sail. I have mentioned before that when sailing downwind you need to use the spinnaker pole and go wing on wing. You will be amazed by the increased performance and comfort. Now all you got was wallowing. Hope this helps. Cheers Peter.
@sailinghjem11 сағат бұрын
@@peterschouten-ys8yr thanks Peter! The issue we had this summer was that as we sailed in shallow water to reduce chances of orca interaction, we experienced a lot more swell than we would have if we’d been sailing further offshore, which we would have been… if not for the orca. There was more wind and less swell in the deeper water. That said, we know using the pole is something we need to be able to do, we’ve just never done it before. I haven’t been able to find a decent instructional video, so will prob ask a couple of skippers in Gibraltar who are more experienced than me to show me how to rig it properly.
@peterschouten-ys8yr10 сағат бұрын
@sailinghjem Hi again. Let me help a bit, first question is have you got the pole mounted with a sliding mast fitting and stored in front of the mast. Second, have you got a dedicated topping lift? A topping lift is all you need. Don't worry about guy's etc. That just complicates things and increases the foredeck work. Let me know and we go from there. Cheers Peter.
@sailinghjem10 сағат бұрын
@ thank you Peter! We have the pole stored on the front of the mast. We do have a dedicated topping lift; it’s metal and stowed away in the saloon, so not attached to anything. There’s also a dedicated downhaul, also metal, also stowed 😂
@peterschouten-ys8yr10 сағат бұрын
Hi, the topping lift normally is a rope either exiting somewhere above the pole track if internally or externally of the mast. Not a metal fitting stored in the cabin. So have a look and we will go from there. Also you will not need a downhaul. Cheers Peter.
@peterschouten-ys8yr9 сағат бұрын
Hi, I added a comment but to not confuse matters here is a fresh approach. The topping lift for the pole is normally a rope like a halyard that either exits the mast somewhere above the pole track or is externally and from a block somewhere above the pole track. This lift attaches to the pole end that is typically the lower fitting when the pole is stored so near the mast foot. Then you may also have an up and down rope attached to the mast track fitting where the mast end of the pole is attached and which is slid up when stored. This is used to secure the mast end fitting at the right height when deployed. The topping lift supports the free end of the pole and let's you adjust the free end where the Genoa sheet attaches for height. See if you got all this so far. Cheers Peter.

I hope you thoroughly recorded all of the pins dimensions and geometry so you can have one made as a spare. Some stainless can be prone to chloride stress corrosion cracking. I have seen instances where chlorides have been leeched out of insulation by rain onto st. steel surface that led to leading to through wall thickness cracking (12mm thk) at a NE location. Lot of chlorides in a marine environment.

Three things I would look into on the install of the AP: 1) I checked the installation manual. The tie rod end side (non-threaded) should have the washer between the rod end and the pin, 2) There is a maximum angle of 5* for the actuator. I think this would require you to do one of two things to add a second nut so that you can trap the quadrant between the two nuts or to add a tiller arm to the rudder post. The second idea is better because you get redundancy should the quadrant fail. (I know that from experience).

I was there for a few days in May last year and I couldn’t believe how “alive” the place was with ordinary people enjoying their time in the cafes, restaurants and bars and keeping the local economy alive.
