⛵️ Bonjour la France! 🌬️ Crossing the English Channel / La Manche
Hello sailors, join us, Faye, Rob and Yewy the Welsh terrier, as we set sail on one of our most exciting adventures yet-crossing the English Channel and saying au revoir to the UK!
🌊 [3:20] We depart Ramsgate, setting our course directly towards France.
🗺️ [5:46] Discussing our passage plans, we carefully navigate around the Goodwin Knoll shallows, ensuring a safe route.
🚢 [8:30] As we enter the bustling shipping lanes, we emphasise the importance of keeping a vigilant watch, and sharing tips on how to safely manage marine traffic.
⛵️ [9:30] We take a moment to reflect on our circumnavigation of the UK, discussing the challenges and joys of sailing the East Coast and why smaller, bilge keel boats are our recommendation for this particular stretch.
🇫🇷 [14:30] A significant milestone as we hoist the French flag, marking our entry into new waters and embracing the maritime traditions of courtesy flags.
🛥️ [17:20] Our arrival into the busy port of Calais is followed by mooring in the marina and a quick bus trip to the ferry terminal to check in with the local police and customs, ensuring everything is in order for our stay.
🏞️ [20:30] Finally, we explore Calais, enjoying its parks and stunning architecture. The day ends perfectly with a purchase of some delightful French cheese and wine, setting the stage for a lovely evening aboard Reach Out.
👍 Don't forget to like, share, and subscribe for more updates from our journey on Sailing Hjem. We love sharing these experiences and hope you enjoy coming along for the ride!

Forget the bilge keeler That is b..x. I went round twice S H with 1.8 fin & definitely did NOT want bilge. As for the channel I have crossed it over 250 times since 1968 & sail on the thames estuary. Always had a fin keel. apart from 1st boat which I got rid of fairly quick. Never sailed anywhere without a chart

Good for you, I bet you have some great memories! Beware that other opinions do exist! 😆 We would have loved paper charts, but it was £2.5k for the charts to go around the UK. Never mind now we're going further afield. Navionics is £39.99 a year, so we chose to go electronic.

We’ve been salivating at the prospect! I’m envisioning fresh, tasty food and crisp white wine on a sunny terrace. The sun bit is quite a problem at the moment! Last night we were contemplating whether to put the heating on! 😂

i wonder how many flags you will hoist by the time you return back to Blighty i feel the Sailing Brothers cheese fetish is going to be challenged on this trip. great episode , did the ais not give an indication on the boat that seemed not to change course 70 deg is a lot
@sailinghjem
@sailinghjem 3 ай бұрын
Haha, if you like cheese then France is the place to be! 😂 the AIS was showing about 200m CPA which I thought was fine, but in reality it seemed a lot closer, hence the bearing away!

Course to steer. No paper charts. Plot it out to scale on paper.

@@sailinghjem paper of sufficient size for the scale you choose. Choosing a scale down that will still give you a sufficiently accurate result, not difficult I suggest. Pencil + plotter. Patrick Laine has a video where he crossed the channel on an angular course over a few tides, works out the net overall tidal set effect over the journey. Crucially he then scales down the course to steer plot to a manageable size. He plots on a chart. However visualise the same thing on paper without all the charty symbols etc and it will look like that. Give me a mo and I'll put the link to the relevant video on.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHmwqJWBr7ysjs0si=WKmNbwDT7beGPWuJ Relevant bit starts at 8.20. You can choose hourly or whatever points on your navionics course. Get tidal stream data from tridal stream atlas. Or, you could probaly get a basic estimate off Navionics tidal stream arrows using the bearing/distance tool to get the bearing. If a short journey within one tide easy. If over a few tides the effect of which is opposite work out overall net effect and use that.

Pete, they won’t let us in with the dog! Not unless she arrives by a ferry. Even if we came back to the UK we still wouldn’t be able to sail her back on our own boat. Bloody madness! So they need to last. I will work out a run rate and ensure the ship keeps to it 😂
