Um, this is Sharp's interpretation of Newcastle. Nothing to do with the country called USA, and produced long before Sharp had ever met an American Square Dance. USA is an abbreviation for Up-a-double, Siding, Arming.

USA is an abbreviation used for Up-a-double, Siding, Arming. I style of dance quite common in the early Playford editions as well as the Lovelace manuscript. It has nothing to do with the country which also uses those initials.

Yes, there is specific music - the tune should be one called "Sprigs of Laurel" see: tunearch.org/wiki/Sprigs_of_Laurel I don't know where to find a recording of it though. In general I look at the store at cdss.org and bandcamp.com. Even amazon.com has some things.

Thank you for the video. Unfortunately, all but the last set with music are off by 4 bars, since the animation already starts during the 4 bars of introduction. And as a side note for those who are interested: in Germany it has become the custom that the twos instead of just watching the ones do their meet and fall back, dance a fall back and meet both times to have a more flowing and dynamic lead up/down.

Please make an animation of "The Highwayman" (see libraryofdances: The London Magazine, or Gentleman's Monthly Intelligencer, 1750, p.516), for me, the choreography is a mistery 🙂 I see two versions of the structure for the verse: AABBC and AABBCA.
@georgewilliams4392
@georgewilliams4392 5 ай бұрын
What Wilson says about Da Capo suggests AABBCA, but I don't see how that fits the figure. AABBC seems close to me. Hmm... unless the typesetter left out a final figure containing the progression which might take the final A. I agree the choreography is a bit of a mystery. I don't see where the progression happens. It is possible to have both 1st and 2nd corners doing a back to back simultaneously in the center and that seems more likely to me than that the 1s should be improper the whole time (without any mention of the fact. I'm not aware of any improper duple minors from this period). So I think I shall throw in a Deus ex Machina half poussette to use the final A phrase and solve the missing progression.

Hello, I am ever so grateful for your video, especially to see dance instructions in action when no other video of the dance can be found. I occasionally teach English and Scottish Country Dance and since I am sight-oriented, having seen the movements of the couples at least once, makes it much easier for me to teach and call it. I am about to teach and call Dish-oriented in a couple of weeks and eagerly started the video. But unfortunately, there's a mistake in the animation that kind of makes the dance less interesting for couples 3 and 4 and actually works against what the choreographers intended. When the set is across the hall in verse 2 and 4, the new active couples that start with the "lead down the middle and back" start from the wrong side of the hall. The top of the set moves CCW (top left wall, bottom, right wall), so the couple that starts the verse at the bottom of the set, becomes the new active couple in the next verse (by their original numbers it's couples 1, 4, 2, 3). You move the top of the set CW and so just the red couple 1 and the green couple 2 alternate in being the active couple, while blue (3) and yellow (4) don't become the active couple at all. I hope it isn't too much work to correct the video. Thanks again for all your work.

This is a terrific dance. Don't be surprised though in the B2 that couples get 12 beats to swing rather than 16. The figure before the swing is to have gents (larks) turn 3/4 and it often takes more than two beats to do that.
