Great video! The kaizen method is a Japanese theme that you mention regarding having everything in reach and on hand when manufacturing. This is scaled down for normal people . I have a couple of projects written down on my white board and I think about what methodology I'd use to make it efficient and fast. I'm in Canada, the garage is cold so i plan my cutting ahead of time and try to complete as much as possible in one go. Love your videos, I'm reluctant to say that we think alike as that would be insulting to you 😂
@rattlingaroundthegarage Жыл бұрын
Exactly! This is a layman's version of Kaizen, Kanban, Six-Sigma LEAN and all that green belt stuff. My day-job is that of a business professor so I spout these principles off all the time--even have another KZbin channel that covers that nonsense--but over here I want to stick with good ol' fashioned English and avoid the business OpX jargon. :) And hey, if we think along the same lines then I'll take it! In my opinion, pallets are great when you have a project that uses at least partly the structure of a pallet, not so much as a source of raw wood. A few examples: - slapping a few pallets together to make an outdoor bench (it's going to be super bulky) - turning it sideways and using the gap that's originally between the floor and the top of the pallet as a hole to create a planter or a bar (it conveniently is just about the right size for most bottles) For that second example, you need precisely 2 cuts, and screwing a plank to make at the bottom (after turning it sideways). I may or may not have a full bar made only with pallets. It looks great with just a bit of sanding and some wood stain which makes it looks like "old wood".
@rattlingaroundthegarage Жыл бұрын
It can be fun to use as a "challenge" material, making a silk purse out of a pig's ear. I may try another project one day.
@fernandezvonschwephausen1979 Жыл бұрын
Yep, pallet wood is a bitch. I had access to tons of pallets, so I chose to use it for utilitarian shelves in my computer rack. Almost wasn't worth it due to prep time, and I didn't even do more than a cursory sand with a belt sander once assembled. But, I was broke back then and it was free wood. Pretty, nope. Functional, absolutely.
@rattlingaroundthegarage Жыл бұрын
My experience exactly. If you have more time than money and don't care so much about the look of the fi al product then it can do the job.

Congrats on the first step, one of many I'm sure! If I may, some advice for sticky/rusted bolts, I call it "the escalation of violence": - spray penetrating oil before, and let it soak. That helps a lot (just be mindful of places where you shouldn't do so, I got told off for using it an a ball joint) - more leverage (with a breaker bar) and going slow avoid slipping and rounding bolts - impacts (with an impact gun) can help break off the rust bond. Sometime it's better to use impacts rather than brute force - some sockets themselves can become worn, using a shiny straight new one can help have a better grip - heat can help. I've not yet had to reach that stage (almost), but it can especially help melt threadlocker - in extreme case, welding an old socket/nut to recover something utterly broken. I hope I'll never have to do that.

I agree somewhat... yeah, you have a learning and inefficiency curve, but you save on the labor and frequently the parts too. Plus there's the time and hassle of scheduling the work and having to either take your car/appliance in, or have someone in your house. And if you've done certain jobs before, you can do it just as quickly as the pros. But yea, without experience it is absolutely inefficient.
@rattlingaroundthegarage Жыл бұрын
Really good points. I'm often willing to do something myself just to save myself the hassle of arranging someone else to do it. Avoiding that bother has a value and therefore adds to the efficiency of the task. Also, if you have more time than money then investing the time is a more efficient use of your resources than hiring out. Yep, you're right!

Props for getting started! Lots of people just stay in the "I don't know phase". Which is a shame, it has never been so easy to learn new stuff. I was in a similar situation (minus the car, the garage and the tools, I had none of those) a year ago. Decided to just get started, buy whatever I need, learn whatever I need, and it's been great fun! You will likely get a few mean comments that assume you're bad because you don't know X or didn't do Y. Ignore the mean part and take it as a learning opportunity. I get great feedback that way that would otherwise need to actually pay someone to teach you. I got to say though, you're already starting in a great place: you have a garage, a car that you can mess with without much repercussion if you break something, and already a sizeable collection of tools. P.S.: I got a channel showcasing what I do, but since my spoken English is terrible, it's unfortunately in French.

Thanks, though it has taken me half a century to finally get to the point where I'm able to push past my fears and get my hands dirty. :) Also, with very, very few exceptions, I don't get mean comments. Je parle français, alors envoyez-moi votre showcase !

I get where you're coming from, and all the "definitions" might apply to your take on DIY, or as it applies to you. But I'd be careful applying at least the top two in the DIY as generalized standard defintions of DIY, that apply to everyone across the board. Personally I specifically DIY BECAUSE usually I can achieve much higher quality than paying someone else to do it for me. From painting the deck, to fixing my car, to tiling a bathroom, etc. Generally almost no one will put in as much care and attention as I will. That doesn't mean things don't go wrong, but when they do you learn how to fix them, and still achieve/strive for, high quality. Effeciency not being part of DIY is another point I disagree with completely. Sometimes that's the goal in of itself, particularly for regular or repeated tasks. Not always the case, true, but never ignored completely, and often the point. Basically making mistakes or not knowing what your doing when you get started are not always mutually exclusive of achieving high quality or being efficient.
@rattlingaroundthegarage Жыл бұрын
That is an excellent point! A couple years ago I redid my kitchen and while it took me nine months (not efficient), and I had never done anything like that before (not even close), I feel like the quality was much higher than if I had hired the job out. There were many instances in which I had to really think through an obstacle and make fine adjustments to get exactly what I wanted. I doubt a contractor would have done that. They would have just thrown it all together and called it good. So yes, I completely agree with you!
