I was birding at Pea Island, NC in November, 2023. A flock of (well known locally) flamingoes that arrived that summer were still there.

I read " Death in the Everglades" (The Murder of Guy Bradley) by Stewert B McIver. I was sitting in the doctors office when I was reading about plume hunters going after the flamingos. I started crying and the doctor was so concerned about me crying. When I told them why I was crying they thought I was crazy. I cried through that whole book.

Audubon had nine enslaved people working in his household and businesses in the 1810s; he later sold them when he needed cash. In early 1819, he took two enslaved men with him down the Mississippi to New Orleans on a skiff, and when he got there, he put the boat and the men up for sale.Mar 24, 2023

There were some Flamingos in Wisconsin last month .I live in Michigan. The birds were spotted on one of the Beaches there. The wind from the hurricane got them off track and the ended up there people were crowded around the beach to see them The Great lakes look like Oceans so I assume they were tired and looking for food. The Nature Center said they could probably stay as long as they had enough food .There are minnows theres small shell fish claims and snails.I hope there is enough for them???

They eat algae, small seeds, tiny crustaceans (like brine shrimp), fly larvae, and other plants and animals that live in shallow waters. When it's time to eat, a flamingo will place its head upside down in the water with its bill pointed at its feet.

So high inflow but low outflow, improve the outflow to the south problem ( algae)solved.

There are Scrub Jays in California to and they look almost identical to Florida Scrub Jays. I don't know about their habits. They love salt-free peanuts.

Thank you for this. I think the “why” of bird banding is often lost behind the flashy achievements of species numbers and the human pleasure of handling birds. The stories are so important.

If you want to live in a middle of nowhere, build a house on stilt in the middle of lake Okeechobee. Lake very shallow and have lots of fish. Nobody to bother you.

Rooftop solar seems like a good use with no impact on the environment. But these solar farms take up vast areas and convert to a mono-environment.The video remarked several times about the quiet. That is because there are no animals or insects around. The ground looks manicured to short grass. No trees , bushes etc. No place for forest or even bushland animals or plants. The panels provide a lot of shade which is only going to encourage a limited diversity of environment. While I do support solar energy, I think the environmental impact of large solar farms has not been considered. I expect Audubon to take a much more impact on the total environment view than the narrow - no impact view, presented here.

Great talk; thank you. Any update regarding conservation efforts of this bird? Development continues to run rampant in our state and as a result, it's my understanding that we are losing other species (flora, too, like golden aster). Is there a way to cross breed it with the western Scrub Jay (kind of like how panther biologists have been doing with other pumas?). I so wish the Florida Scrub Jay was our state bird.

So I have two questions. What happens when the sun doesn’t shine for those 800,000 homes that rely on solar generated power? The other question is that you did not mention anything about the cost to the environment about building solar panels with rare earth metals. Everything needs to be taken into account when deciding if something is good or not.

Nice promotion of solar energy. Let's hope the energy companies and dysfunctional Florida state legislature don't eliminate or mess with our homeowner's net metering. I have 54 solar PV panels on my roof and wish more homeowners would do the same but the energy companies are trying to mess with our incentives to go solar.
