The wors part of a small antenna is trying to make it work in an urban area in Alaska, it's simply does not work. Too much noise and the propagation in Alaska is way deferent than the one you guys have in UK or in places down south from the north pole. Phone band is very difficult in here, however FT8 and WSPR work great with any antenna the same with CW.

Link to purchase this antenna please. How well does it reject local noise?
@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV5 күн бұрын
Hello John, if you got extreme noise then any antenna will hear it unfortunately, for me it is no worse on VHF for noise when compared to my 2m white stick antenna. A discone will never pull in signals as strong as a dedicated antenna for that specific frequency but also this also helps with noise levels. On HF it does surprise me, sometimes hearing stations clearer than on my wire loop antenna that I have for 40m band, hearing them better mainly down to the noise being reduced. The thing with antennas is is location, location, location. Moving an antenna a few meters can change the way it reacts with its surroundings. I always was told height is king when it comes to VHF, but I hear VHF stations when at around 25ft that I cannot hear when it is at 35ft? When lower it is nearer the house and the roof must interact as an improved counterpoise. I still use my HF discone, if I want to hear a particular station stronger I just switch to a white stick higher up or my HF loop, but 90% of the time I stick to the discone. If I can hear a station signal 5 then happy, switching antenna would only make it a 7ish. Regards Steve

@@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV Did you do a SWR test on the white stick Steve? I need it for PMR and wondered what difference it would make having it in the s bag and not on a pole (PMR)
@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV6 күн бұрын
@@stevetaylor8446 i didn't on this occasion, it is pre tuned with no adjustment. In past i had this indoors and tested and it gave a flat low vswr across 70cm and on 446, though technically not authorised for pmr use. I would think it acts no differently to an antenna on a hand held radio when in use, though it is a dipole and does not relie on any counterpoise. It is a solid antenna, can easily be attached to a pole it give more height. Steve

It is a proven design, it basically works as a matching stub, but has no effect on impedance if you bend it at 90 degrees or keep it straight. Other antennas this would change its impedance. Where the coax joins can fine tune the vswr by small movements up or down ladder line. Regards Steve

No balun or loops needed to get 1:1 on 2m... it was fantastic! Worked so well on FM and SSB, I often forgot to switch over to my 6 ele quad yet worked as far as east germany and the south of france on 10w [was a great time for sunspots lol] Keen to get reactivated now, you have inspired me thank you! I'm sorry Stephen, I know what is are trying to say here, BUT your tests are not scientific. You can't compare different antennas with different radio configurations. Did you measure power output from both setups? How about field strenghts, SWR and tuners? Have you taken into account polarization factors of the antennas or even directional properties? Propagation changes? Takeoff angles? Overall your experiment does not prove anything as you are not doing your comparisons scientifically. Trust me antenna size CAN make a huge difference. If you are trying to say this to an interested party that is put off with antenna size, then that's a whole other story. Please don't try to tell us your unscientific approach proves anything, because it doesn't. There are way too many factors involved that you are not taking into account.
@EnthusiastSteveM6WVVАй бұрын
I agree it was totally non scientific, what i was trying to get over, especially to new comers or those thinking that it would be impossible for them to get involved in the hobby because on limitations of putting up a large hf antenna. I just wanted to show you can still get on hf with a very small modest set up. Of course it will not beat a stacked array, a full size 160m dipole etc but it will get them on air. Just last evening i used a 1/4 wave whip on my car for 12m, less than 20w and contacted a USA POTA station in North Carolina. Yes i used good propagation and location, i was right by the sea. It is all the variables that make the hobby so interesting. I take on board and thank you for your comments. Its a great hobby, the big challenge is to encourage young people into the radio hobby to keep it and the industry alive. Thank you regards Steve

@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV2 ай бұрын
Yes, you could either run the radio from the car battery or run a secondary one and charge from the car alternator like you say or even run a small solar panel to trickle charge it. My leisure battery i use is good for 3 months using it a few hrs a week, i then charge it up and good to go again. 👍

What about a transceiver where one part is installed in the Boot and the head unit is installed in the front of the car.
@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV2 ай бұрын
That works, take into account humidity, temp and vibration. Try and keep cable runs short as voltage can dropboff even over short runs. Use as thick cor power cable you can. Use rf chokes, ferrites etc on all leads/coax. Consider whats best location for an external speaker if body of radio is in the boot. Modern cars do not lend themselves to installing radios like cars from years back. Firewalls are sealed, battery access limited. But all said if you can go out mobile it opens up all new possibilities, lower noise levels, better take off for signals. Regards Steve
