Hi. I just saw this. You left out a VERY important loading consideration. Many boat ramps do not have concrete bottoms. If the ramp has a gravel, sand, or mud bottom loading like you describe is very bad. What you are recommending is commonly called "motor loading". Loading like you describe causes the prop wash to excavate a hole where the outboard is positioned when loading and the excavated material to be deposited in a mound some distance behind the hole you've just dug. This hole and mound will get bigger causing your outboard to strike the mound when you approach the ramp plus cause the ramp to be gradually erode into the prop wash hole. Please redo this KZbin and stress the limitations to motor loading. Thanks

what is your estimate of speed for a 2021 model 223F Ranger Reata 24'2" length, toon dia. 24" tri-toon, mercury 150L 4s, with lifting strakes? It has powder coated toons, if that makes a difference. 12/26/2024

If you need to replace the wood on your bunks, use pressure treated wood. Always have a spare tire. I also carry a spare wheel hub assembly. It is much easier to change a hub than have to hammer-out and hammer-in new races and bearings on the side of the road. In addition, make sure you have at least one working jack for the trailer. Finally, before a road trip, hook-up your boat-trailer combo and go for a 10 mile drive. Pull into a gas station and check the temperature of each wheel bearing by grabbing the buddy-bearing with your hand. All of these should be warm to the touch, and the same temperature. If one of the buddy-bearings is HOT (so you cannot touch it for more than 2 seconds) then you have an issue. Service this wheel assembly before you get on the road for a long trip.

FOR THE ELECTRICAL OF THE LIGHTS I DONT HAVE THE PLUGS ON THE BACK OF THE TRUCK i have then in the rear of the truck where the freshwater or saltwater cant cause damage to them, . mine is an extention to the rear of the truck keeping the lines out of the water is a plus. . the electrical ine running down the side and to the rear of the boat are rubber coated to seal the wires and at the end the signal lights are up high on the guides pole to the guide the boat in to the trailer,. as far as the strap on the front of the trailer to the boat, tears happen with friction when traveling up and down the ramp, and the tension on the strap, , this is not good!, i installed clips in the rear of the boat for tie downs , the straps run from the rear of the boat, forward, holding the load for the boat to move when traveling down the road.

In Indiana, the boat and the trailer are registered and titled (the latter exempt if grandfathered, such as my 1976 Starcraft Montego until 2023 when I acquired it from the original owner). Indiana has boater licences but they're only for people without driver's licenses (too young, suspended, etc.). Finally, there is an annual DNR permit required if boating in public lakes (Federal waters, such as the Ohio river which is a state line with Kentucky, are exempt).

Hey its been a while im trying to match prop for my setup.. I got small fiberglass boat ( 380 cm x 165 cm ) i have mounted mercury 30 hp 3 cyl 4t egi 750cc with 11 5/8 x 11 aluminium prop and i go only about 36/37 kmph. I already tried 10 1/8 x 15 aluminium and 11 1/4 x 12 aluminium. current (11 5/8 x 11) prop gives me the best speed - but i think its still miserable... Boat weight with full equipment its around 550/600 kg ( 180 kg is boat, 110 kg is engine, 2 ppl around 90 kg each and lures about 40 kg). Should i go to 11 5/8 x 15? My tacho says im running already +/- 6150 which is 150 rpm more than producent says on tag. Please help.

Great video. Some point if not all apply to sailboats. The biggest one being the majority of used sailboats are newer mass production coastal cruisers which are not a strongly made. So in this case if one is looking to cross oceans voyaging with safety in as the one one goal then looking at older blue water boats from 2000 to the 70s re what one should consider.

I disagree, I ran a boat livery company for many years. We had a fleet of a dozen small gasoline powered boats. Despite running E10 fuel I had zero fuel related issues. We laid most of our small boat fleet up November 1st and despite leaving gas it them all winter never had an issue come May. Now granted these boats didn't sit around like some private ones do, they got 1500-2500 engine hours a year. However most of them sat unused for 6 to 7 consecutive months a year with ethenol gas in them. I did winterize the engines by running them on a portable tank with a very rich mixture or gas, two stroke oil, ATF, and MMO. However the winterizing tank mix didn't have ethenol free gas in it. It just had fresh E10 gasohol.

The problem is that Lake Champlain kayakers usually do not have nav lights. I run with no other boats around with spot and/or dock lights because more than once, some reflective tape on a lifevest or equipment was the best indication that a kayak was ahead. Would RADAR display a kayaker? Just last night I ordered a $250 handheld NVG, always looking for a better solution.

Avoid any stern drive (inboard-outboard) boat that has lived in salt water. Stern drives were designed for fresh water lakes, not salt water. Ask any salt water marina operator why they love stern drives... Because they are Always in for repair or replacement. $$$$ I see late 60's and early 70's stern drive boats in Michigan fresh water every weekend of the summer. Low hour boats stored properly inside a building are the best boats to find. Also, boats that have never had bottom paint added are easy to inspect. Bottom paint can hide damage.. Any boat stored outside can be a disaster. The very best boat to buy is a boat ran in fresh water, low hours, and properly stored inside a building during the off season. Even better if the boat is on a lift with a canopy during the boating season. Avoid Bayliner at all costs. Even new. Only use ethanol free fuel. unless in case of emergency. I don't care what the manufacturers say about being ok to run it. If you run that fuel constantly, you will eventually have problems.

Few thoughts on my personal experience. I have a 1997 20 foot Voyager fish/cruise layout and absolutely love it! I have babied it and it has been a labor of love, and still looks relatively great for its age. It has a 90 HP Mercury Force motor that has been irritable when it comes to idling since day one which is my only major complaint. That, and I sometimes get cold on the passenger side. Otherwise, we opted for a boat with an aluminum deck and dark green carpet against all other opinions that said it would burn your feet, but that has never been true. It also will never rot out. I would think boat decks without carpet would be more likely to burn your feet, but easier to clean as I have to actually vacuum mine. Not too much of a problem for me since I keep a cheap vacuum cleaner on a shelf in the boat bay of our detached garage high up where I can just pull it down onto the boat and plug it in. That said, I will stress that you absolutely must protect your boat from the sun and humidity as I have done for this boat or it wouldn’t still be looking good since 1997, and now it is 2024. Keep it covered and keep the dry out stuff under the tent if you cannot keep your boat in a garage. Moisture is cancer to a boat. And sun. Yes, the wind can make a pontoon hard to maneuver, but just put the Bimini down and go slow. Pontoons can take a lot of abuse if you bump some thing. I actually love that you can beach them and not worry about cracking your fiberglass hull. Yay for aluminum! I could go on, but I am just waiting for someone to come out with my dreamboat, which would be a 20 foot with a wraparound windshield, aluminum deck, and a porta potty. It hasn’t happened yet. I suppose I could special order one, but I’m not dropping the price of a house on a pontoon boat.

Looks real nice Tom. Man, sure wish I could work as fast as you guys!! 3 of you stripped and put together a toon in what…10 minutes?!! 😂 You mentioned the cost of rejuvenating a pontoon. Well I finished my 24’ this spring. Took it down to the cross members and 2 pontoons. Keep in mind I was on a budget and I did much like you, converting a 1991 with worn out carpet, flaking plywood and badly worn/ripped/missing seats, to a new, much more user friendly layout with the basic style seats, vinyl flooring and basic consul. All in, with the new wiring, new lighting, new stereo and a second forward mounted bimini, I’m into this project about $15,000, not including the cost of the boat, which was $7000 and a newer Honda motor for $5000. All this was Cd$ So hindsite, could I have paid less for an equally nice pontoon…probably. Would I have been as proud of it as I am of mine…don’t think so. Plus, I now know every inch of this boat. Every screw, every washer, every nut, every bracket is S/S. All wiring splices won’t pull apart as every one is butt joined, soldered and shrink wrapped. Nothing is exposed to rough edges and everything works as it’s sposed to and as I want it to!! And that was all done with help from you and your amazing videos!! So a special shout out and thanks to you and your crew, Tom!!! You guys and gal…rock!!!
