I have a valid license and cannot load new samples and instruments. It is Friday and I was planning to work on music, but MUSIO is dead. Interestingly, the samples I have already loaded (in the past) work fine. IT seems like the recent update screwed everything up. .I was asked today to reset my password (for no reason) and install an update (which most likely caused all the issues). Reported the problem and waiting, but It really sucks to use such an unreliable service

For a long time I was using PalleteGear which got superseded by Monogram. I’ve recently switched to using FVDE by Audio Imperia which has longer faders (you can see it in my latest video). I’ve also used the Korg nanokontrol which is a budget option that works well enough although it has quite short faders

There’s only 100 presets on the M1R so there are no banks to manage at all. You can load new presets over sysex

Yes, it does. It even can simulate a D50, except the PWM. Nobody needed PWM after the 9ties anyway. What is it? a bit of wanky shift in sounds? Can be done by filters anyway.

Thanks a lot Stephen for this review. I was about to buy one of these but I think I may have to hold off. I was looking for something with more usual instruments like piano / piano + strings / electric piano / warm lead tones / expansive pads, etc. I would say piano sound realism is a must for me. I was wondering which sound module do you recommend that has these good tones but they are sitting in the lowest zone of budget scale. Thanks a lot.
@StephenTallamyMusic3 ай бұрын
If you haven’t checked out the other sound modules videos on my channel (JV1080, M1R and Proteus) then that might be an avenue and all of them can be picked up reasonably cost effectively. But bear in mind they are all tech from the 80-90s and so compared to something new they will be a long way the level of realism we enjoy today. The thing is, the rack mount module seems to have died and so if you get something newer you are likely to be also paying the expense of a keybed etc. I really like the piano on my Roland FP80 (which I’m using as a controller in this video) and you can sometimes pick it up out one of it’s older relatives (e.g. FP-4) at not too bad a price but then you aren’t going to get a particularly wide range of sounds and you’ll need the space for it.

@StephenTallamyMusic3 ай бұрын
Yes. I choose long articulations for the comparison because some of the libraries don’t have short actuations (for example Olafur Arnold’s Evolutions).
@fritsvanzanten35733 ай бұрын
@@StephenTallamyMusic I am new to string libraries/samples, and was looking for strings for Motown and 70s Disco and understood those are about short articulations. Looking for an affordable one I find most reviews and demos are about broad 'cinematic' layers and indeed many, certainly more affordable libraries only have a few articulations, not the ones needed for the genres I mentioned. There are some Spitfire libraries mentioned as suitable for those, however. Thank you for the reply.
@StephenTallamyMusic3 ай бұрын
@@fritsvanzanten3573 yes for that style you definitely want short articulations and probably would get a most of what you need out of ensemble patches as you probably don’t need to split out each section. Also you probably would want a dry sound. This rules out quite a lot of the Spitfire stuff because it’s recorded in large halls.
@fritsvanzanten35733 ай бұрын
@@StephenTallamyMusic Thank you for thinking along Those are indeed the things I'm in the process of figuring out (and I don't want to buy something to find out afterward). It makes that most comparison videos don't apply, but you can't tell from the title (hence my slightly frustrated comment). Spitfire's Chambers Strings and Intimate Stings are mentioned though. Another aspect is that libraries also may consist of loops/complete phrases, which I don't prefer.

Cool! Nice work. One of my (many) in-progress pieces leans heavily on 'Time' for inspiration (SUCH a lovely track), and what I've learned more than anything else is how expertly he keeps things simple, and at the same time how bad I am at trying to do the same. He is a master, no question.

The problem with these samples is they all cut out at around 12 kHz. A few surpass that, but the effect of stacking 1080 2080 3080 5050 5080 orchestral patches (say) is that the ear doesn't hear anything in the frequency spectrum above the limit. As a result the sounds tend to mush together. They no longer have a distinct formant in the upper frequencies. And yeah, I owned 3 XV3080.
