I think that Bear Bryant said it best "offense sells tickets, but defense wins championships." Bear may have been one of the greatest football coaches of all time but I think that he learned that lesson from watching Bill Russell dominate the game of basketball for over a decade because of his defense. It's funny to me to see people try to say that LeBron James is the goat because he's the all time leader in points; or that Michael Jordan is the goat because he has the moat scoring titles, most points per game in the regular season, most points per game in the playoffs, and most points scored in a playoff game; or that Wilt Chamberlain is the goat because he has the most points scored in a game and most points scored in a season. People really should start to place more emphasis on defense in their goat debates imo.

@@casual35 well the NBA All-Defensive Team honor wasn't given out until Bill Russell's final season so that's why he only won one otherwise he probably would've had 13; the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award wasn't given out until after he retired otherwise he probably would've had the most DPOY of all time; and steals weren't tracked until after he retired otherwise he probably would've had the most steals and steals titles of all time. With all that said, I still think that Michael Jordan is the goat as he was outstanding offensively and still great defensively while Bill Russell was outstanding defensively but not great only good offensively.
