Never get your Military History from Hollywood. One type of cannon shell exploded ("And the rockets red glare; the bombs bursting in air;"), but they didn't hit the ground with a quick-fuse and blow upwards like they do today. They were still used as in the Napoleonic era. The ball bounced and then sliced through the unit; sending men tumbling as if they were bowling pins.

This Yankee Civil War reenactor loves the 2nd South Carolina String Band music. I respect the courage of the men on both sides. My only regret is that not everyone today has moved past the Civil War. To add; the Civil War was the most destructive event in our nation's history and I continue to pray that all can get past it.

At 1:34 that's a Texas flag and a Confederate Navy flag. The Confererate Battle flag had white trim around it.

Lovely-looking Corn-feds! The attention to detail is fabulous. In the corn, one of the Rebs is shown holding his hand out in front of him to ward off the Yankee bullets. This was written in a book I read about one of the battles.They were also eating sloosh before the fight, popular with Confederate soldiers. Well done

That would have been the 1st Texas at Antietam. That unit was raised in and around Lufkin, Texas.

The sad part is. By the time of Gettysburg many southern soldiers did not have shoes. The south, or more to the point, the states that provided troops, could not supply them in the field with what they needed. Yes, I am a Yankee, but I was born in Georgia, but moved north to Maryland when I was young, Five I think. I've studied the Civil War, and my Great Great Grandfather, whom I am named after, fought with the 46 Illinois, Company A. And he survived the war. This is a good song, and represents how bad the southern soldiers had it at times.

they *wouldn't* provide the confederate army with shoes, not "couldn't." infighting among the southern states and refusal to recognize jefferson davis is what led to their ultimate defeat. which shouldn't be surprising, given only 51% wanted to secede.

The proportion of southerners that voted for secession was far far greater than 51%, and the Confederacy did provide shoes. You only have to look at the military returns to see that. Plus there was the Richmond shoe factory. Granted infighting between the State and Confederate Governments weakened the Confederate war effort.

Why are we honoring war-criminals? Don't believe me? In his autobiography, Sherman said he knew what they were doing were war crimes; they had been taught it at West Point. But he also said he didn't care; he knew winners write the rules and he would never be prosecuted. To paraphrase him, "There was a war to win," and he didn't care how he did it. Had they lost, Grant, Sherman, and Sheridan could have been hanged. After WWII, we hanged Japanese commanders for less.
