And a 3% income tax whether you live in the city or work in the city. It’s also a Sanctuary County. That is fine. But there never used to be so many murders 5 years ago. They were non existent. The road US 131 between GR to Kalamazoo are two Sanctuary Counties where a lot of the bodies are dumped. Also it used to be safe to bicycle or jog. The. weird murders happen with NO MOTIVE. People have been getting aggressive and violent. I lived outside of GR in a very low crime neighborhood. Woke up one morning and my car was stolen. 2 years later the police found it it Detroit. They didn’t charge the man because he used my car for work. Think about changes that come with Sanctuary Cities and Counties. They mean different things to different people. Usually it is an open invitation for non-citizens who came here illegally. I knew many illegal people in GR. They buy their SSN from attorneys. They were nice people. But Sanctuary also means MS-13 type people are also welcome. Think about what that looks like in 3, 5, 10 or 15 years. Or even tomorrow. It used to be if you had no enemies you were safe. 5 years ago. The murders and crimes happening today in/around GR are totally random and they get away with it. They just celebrated NO murders for the month of July. Grand Rapids itself is not that big so no murders in one month is not something to jump for joy about. The best of the best suburbs and schools are full of drugs. This used to be a place people came to raise a family. Marijuana is legal so your car insurance will be high and mote DUI’s on the road. Kent County was named as having the most DUI’s in the whole state. It is very slippery on bad roads. People take their life in my hands just driving to work. Look at most recent statistics, not statistics and crime from 5 years ago. Taxes are going up on homes in the future because roads are so bad. That is one reason why Michigan loses 2-3% of people per year. High taxes. Bad roads. Illegal drugs. Marijuana is still a federal crime for a reason. Also GR is a heavily medicated city so bad that they find antidepressants in the fish. Ozone and air quality has become a problem. Businesses are still closing. There is still trauma from the longest worst lockdowns in the country. I don’t recommend it unless you MUST live in GR. 3 women run the state. Check out their X sites. Wow! They make Michigan look bad. Too many years of unaccomplished women running things. The men are too nice to take over the government.

3% of your income to the City of Grand Rapids is a lot. This is how they can create multi million dollar projects that are not necessary. Michigan state income tax is in addition to Grand Rapids City income tax. Some cities and “suburbs” around Grand Rapids also have “city income taxes.” So check it out before you move. Grand Rapids is also crowded, has parking issues and heavy fines if you park too long. There are less than 55 days of sunshine per year in Grand Rapids. I have never seen “visitors” in GR until they buried Gerald Ford. GR a long way from everywhere. It takes a long time to find a good job. Way too many useless hospitals. Crime is way up since GRAND Rapids is a Sanctuary County.

I’m moving to Grand Rapids hopefully in the next week and have been driving down frequently from northern Michigan (just moved from Phoenix AZ). I have been looking on Zillow, I would appreciate an inside scoop on neighborhoods near down town!

Yes. Think again. Just don’t do it. Stay anywhere but West Michigan. Go north East of East. No jobs. Unsteady economic area. Young and old people are leaving Michigan due to lock ins. The next Governor Will be worse. It was psychological abuse.

Most people have told me Michigan overall is a purple state ...so Is Grand Rapids more of a blue or red City?..... I am an Austrian who wants to move out of CA now really badly, very unhappy there.... CA is way too over populated way too hot ({I LOVE THE COLD!!!}, way too expensive with extreme taxation and way too much of a communist place.... not my kind of thing... I really love how Michigan looks and feels from what I have seen on Videos and pictures, and I will come visit soon...

Property taxes are high? I originally looked at Detroit Metro, you guys are like 3-4x cheaper than that and cheaper than what I’d pay in CA. Could you create a map of the schools district lines in GR? I’m pretty dialed in with the SEVs and accurately figuring out my monthly, but I’m not sure what the school district lines are in the city and that would be a huge help in helping me in my home search. Sure it’d be helpful for others too 👍

The amphitheatre has to be voted on, and there are some high crime areas like most cities that u need to know about before you move here .. and it's definitely near downtown

I left Holland since 2006 and never looked back. There’s nothing there but factory work. If you love small town and want to retire working for a factory than Holland is for you. One thing I miss about holland is it’s close to everything. Detroit , Chicago, Minneapolis, Milwaukee all within 3-5 hours drive. I got in trouble as a teen and charge as an adult i was never able to hold down a job because of my past. So I left to Alaska now in Dallas. Very successful with my own business. I couldn’t have done that in Holland. Great family atmosphere though. But I will never move back.

I’m from Miami, FL. My husband is from South Haven and he went to GVSU. We met while living in Los Angeles. Now we live in Arlington, VA (just outside of D.C.). We’re thinking about moving back to Michigan (we lived in Kalamazoo our first year of marriage in 2020). We have two young kids, and are debating between Holland and GR. I know the vibes are totally different but the safety issue is a big one for me. I know that’s ironic considering I’m from Miami and love LA, but I hear it’s worse in GR. Is there a good resource for figuring out which areas truly are safest?

My city is great

East Grand Rapids is a city in its own right, not a “neighborhood” of Grand Rapids. It’s been its own entity (first a Village, then a city) for over 100 years.

All the parking garages hinder people from coming downtown, plus corewell health is taking up too much space on michigan ave and beyond.

Good video. I'm a long time Grand Rapids resident. It may not be as big as Chicago or New York, but for a city of its size Grand Rapids and the surrounding area has so much to offer. And some of the best real estate rates in the country and is climate change effect so many areas of the country it being surrounded by the Great lakes is going to make it very very attractive to so many people.
