"Don't need the Word... do it your way... It's the only way." And then there's "Pull Jesus from a hat" -- remember that choice gem, from another ELP album? How much good did ELP's bald-faced atheism and enmity towards God do these guys -- especially, yes, I'll say it, Keith? Might it have helped Keith any to have known Jesus -- as it has his peer, Rick Wakeman? No condemnation nor scorn; just a fair and sincere -- and damned good -- question.

Another hidden gem. Ian’s classic observational lyrics. Another hidden jewel is “I am your Gun”.. I find myself listening to most of these what we used to call “B” sides back in the day.

Brilliant bass and drums on this track and so many others by Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond and Barriemore Barlow. This was the best ever Tull line-up - Ian, Jeffrey, Barriemore, Martin Barre, & John Evan. Incomparable, peerless, and unique.

This track is a truly weird mix of moods and sounds, which is probably why it's my favorite on the album. I think the story is pretty clear from the clues in the first few lines: He's catching the late ride home, forgot to phone, the back door is open. In short, he surprised his wife and her lover, who ran out the back door when the he showed up. He doesn't see the lover, but puts together the clues: "Take your warm hands off me" But he's ready to make a deal: "I won't say nothing, just let me be your toad in the hole." He loves the comfort of his home life, his hobbies, his plans for the house, and he's willing to pay the price of his wife fooling around if she'll just let him keep the status quo. Just make sure the lover is gone when he gets back. I think there's an implied irony that his wife is fooling around *because* he's self-involved, less interested in her than the comfort of the house.

Soundtrack of my life. My parents split in 73, and my mom had this album. My little brother and I played vinyl because we were too broke for TV. I was 7, and I loved Warchild and Stand Up. I saw Jethro Tull when I was 9! I waited all night for Bungle in the Jungle. It was one of the last songs played since it was their biggest hit at the time. So bad ass. This really stands the test of time. 7/25/75 Seattle Colliseum. We moved back to California after that. I was so glad to see sunshine again. The local station KGB 101.5fm played Jethro Tull regularly after that. Good times.
