Quintessential English song, I mean, as darwinian as can be : "Man is man made, when the hour comes don't turn away and face the light of day, and do it your way", and so blissfully beautiful at that.

I thought Darwinism concerned natural selection in response to the environment at the genetic level. This song isn't about that, but about conscious human belief and action. Humanist rather than Darwimian.

Surely some of Lake's best lyrics - the disillusionment with mass religion. Also one of my favourite ELP tracks very underrated - love the massive organ sound.
@laurakelley37496 жыл бұрын
Best interpretation I've seen yet - "the disillusionment with mass religion", and I agree with Greg's lyrics. So much of organized religion is based on what is convenient to whoever is in charge of it - in terms of choosing what to believe. It could turn into a very long discussion so I'd better quite talking to someone who made a comment 9 years ago!
@davidbentley40324 жыл бұрын
What? 'Can you believe God makes you breathe? Why did he lose six million jews'? Surely the worst lyric ELP ever conjured up.

To be clear, this is not "disillusionment with mass religion". Anyone with religious faith can experience such disillusionment. This is an explicitly atheist lyric, and all the better for it.

robert bishop Here's a bit of fun: Sunday, I wasn't feeling to hot. After a trip into town, I came home and took a nap. I just had some (kind of gross) "spaghetti bake" from the deli I picked up on the way home. Kind of like lasagna. Well, I had a fucking TITS dream! I dreamed I was lying in bed reading a hardcover book I had just bought at a yard sale for $4. I opened it about 1/4 of the way into it and the book played "Aquatarkus" with amazing quality fidelity. I looked all over the book including the spine for batteries and speakers. I thought, "I just scored heavily on this book." Each time I turned the pages forward, the song played further into it. Well, my wife came in and accidently woke me because I was talking in my sleep. "What was I saying?!" She didn't know. Anyway, turned out I had a fever of 102-something thus possible explaining the cool dream. That and the shit food. Next I'll score a pop-up book with Keith stabbing his organ over and over when you open and close the book...hopefully.

I think the song is anti-organized religion and rigid theologies...a continuation of the forces at play on side-1 of Tarkus. "Do you believe God makes you breathe, why did he lose 6 million jews" ...that sort of addresses the problems we have in feeling good about humanity and being spiritually conscious in a world full of Nazi Germany..Vietnam..the Iraq war.

This is one of ELPis best. I think Greg may have switched sides since writing these lyrics - it happens as you get older and have to cram for your finals. Whatever your beliefs, its still amazing - Not many people could come up with lyrics like this in their early 20s. Infact not many people could write lyrics like this at any age (or music for that matter).

Bach "quoted" Vivaldi works note for note - the Baroque composers called it "parody" back then. Using other's works is a time-honored tradition, and Emerson does it masterfully. Perhaps it may have been better for the composers' names to be listed in the earlier albums, but they finally did with "Hoedown" and all later works.

Beautiful - no matter what religious beliefs you have, there must be a time when you question what you are taught. Religion becomes dangerous when you blindly accept someone's interpretation of the bible.
