Thank you. Fascinating info I didn’t know…and I grew up in the UK, moved to the States in 1983 (yes, I’m oooold!). Trying to put a coat of arms together for my sons. Had no clue about the “label of 3 points.” Really appreciate the info.

The white banner being used for a thousand years is symbolic of Gondor’s culture refusing to acknowledge a new royal line, even when most other cultures would have made their stewards kings by 3019. Denethor was super bitter about that, complaining that the more regal a kingdom, the longer it takes before they’ll accept a new royal house. In Gondor, not even a thousand years was enough, and Boromir always felt that their family should hold the kingship.

My familys clan, the Buchanans (which is still my surname) originated in the 13th century. They came from Stirling, and supported Robert The Bruce (and fought alomgside him at Bannockburn) and im a relative of him too via my direct ancestor (27th great grandfather) marrying his great grandaughter, Isabella Stewart. I can trace my ancestors back to around pre Jesus times, they were Petty kings of Munster in Ireland before the son of the last king, Anselan, came to scotland and was given land by King Malcom after assisting him with invading vikings. I have a reasonable amount of knowledge on all this stuff as ive studied scottish history extensively, for many, many years. My favorite period is King James VI and I, and the scottish witch hunts. My ancestor, George buchanan, was his and his mother Mary Queen of Scots, tutor.

Can you do a video on the heraldry from A Song of Ice and Fire / Game of Thrones
@MartianMothman Жыл бұрын
You should do a video about the heraldry from A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones) or at least the heraldry of the great houses, like the Targaryens, Starks, Lannisters, Baratheons, Tyrells, Arryns, Greyjoys, Martells and Tullys.

You talked about sons a lot. Can you tell us what daughters can do to obtain their arms? You made it seem like they'll deny anyone who isn't a son (these days).

Clan societies are proliferating geometrically. Isn’t ‘Laird’ simply someone who owns enough land to derive an income from rents? Particularly if they don’t have a higher title

So, I have 2 questions… 1, Is a clan commander only appointed if there is no Chief or Chieftain? Or does the current clan Chief/Chieftain appoint one? How is a modern clan Chieftain appointed/Recognized?

Fantastic to hear from the Lord Lyon. He speaks very clearly and encouragingly on the topic. He has rekindled my interest in the history of tribal and clan identity. Might you happen to have links to the books and resources he recommends on the subject?

My sigil is the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor. Once it's bestowed upon you, no king, president, lord, or lady can ever take it from you. I have the right to bear the sigil the rest of my life, but it can not be passed on to any other generation, lest they graduate from Parris Island or San Diego, and receive their own EGA. HOWEVER... In the United States of America, you have the right to express yourself however you want, as long as it's peaceful, so wear whatever sigil you want!

Hi, the St Andrews cross/saltire was never used as the royal banner or royal standard of Scotland although it became our national flag/banner. The royal insignia previous to the lion was most likely either a 'wild boar' or a dragon.

Matriculation and marticulation are not two pronounciations of the same word, with all due respect. One is a word, the other is not. also, ”candidacy” and ”cadency” are two different, separate terms. It s like saying Gorge Washington or Heraldicity is just your pronunciation. Some words have different pronounciations (potayto=potahtoe, consigliere-consiliere, etc) but these are not.

I presume that these are made of wood and painted? And I'm a little confused as none of the examples shows a name other than the first one, none show dates, and the one for Lord Lyons has the initials WD on the dexter and HS on the sinister which are neither his initials nor the initials of his office. Possibly the initials of a Latin phrase?

On my fathers side is Andrew from New Zealand 1842, Clan Ross I know is my clan. This is where I'm confused. Andrew is a sept but is it family ? Many changes of spelling were made and Ross was not original. Thoughts ? From Goggle... Clan Ross (Scottish Gaelic: Clann Anndrais [ˈkʰl̪ˠãũn̪ˠ ˈan̪ˠt̪ɾɪʃ]) is a Highland Scottish clan. The original chiefs of the clan were the original Earls of Ross.[3]

I have one big question. If you see this post and care to respond. My surname McKinley is listed as a sept in three clan's how can I know which is the strongest or correct connection?! Especially if we have a Tartan listed for Mackinley.

Maybe trace your ancestors and hopefully if you find where they originated from youll find which clan they were a sept of.

Thanks for making this so plain. I can use it to convince the younger of my brothers that he can’t just send in his $30 to grab a set of arms he likes. I’m doing genealogy research on my very Salt of the Earth names. Even so I constantly see on the Family Tree Coats of Arms attached to particularly the first settlers in the US or Canada. I do not copy them because there is no way in the world any of the Wright Coats followed us First son to first son. Made up my personal Arms, refuse to use a Fusile, and use them only in the game I play where there is a registration To the Game!
