Englishman arrives on foreign shores, and is greeted by... "You can't display those coats of arms here... They're not registered" Englishman replies... "Yes I can Sir, because I'm invading you"

my dads an immigrant from india so I don’t get any coat of arms from him, and I don’t think I get anything from my mom who’s american, so can I just create a new one from scratch and make it “official”?

Great video! I would love to get your take on Flemish heraldry. Flanders has a rich history of heraldry and today has the Flemish Heraldic Council that grands arms (by law). Coat of arms here can be inherited, yet we don't use cadency (or it's not common) as far as I know. We do speak of "familiewapens": family arms. Kind regards, Kevin Haelterman

There is such thing as family crest in Scotland, in a sense. The member of a clan can wear the chief's crest as a badge. "It is correct for these people to wear their Chief’s Crest encircled with a strap and buckle bearing their Chief’s Motto or Slogan. The strap and buckle is the sign of the clansman, and he demonstrates his membership of his Chief’s Clan by wearing his Chief’s Crest within it." Also, I believe heralds serving the same sovereign recognize each other's grants. So arms granted by the College in England would be recognized by the Lord Lyon in Scotland.

So, are you saying that if someone has recognized arms in Scotland, they can actually have them recognized in the US if they go to the right place? Quite interesting, always learning something new.
@HeraldryCorner3 жыл бұрын
Yes. Just as arms granted in England are only protected in England, and as arms granted in Scotland are only protected there, arms assumed in the us should be registered in some way to protect them here, any American with foreign arms should do the same. Just as an Englishman may matriculate his own arms in Scotland to protect them there.

A person can copyright or trademark the Armorial or Heraldic Achievement in the US since there is not actual governing authority that registers or grants Arms but it would protect the image from being used by another person.

@@marquesdevalera7403 I would wonder if one could argue since it is protected and registered in the UK government, that it’s also recognized as being the property of one in dividual by the British government. We do reciprocate a lot of things.
@RJStockton2 жыл бұрын
@@marquesdevalera7403 This is not correct. While you can register a specific rendering of arms with the federal authorities, you cannot register your arms as such. Anybody who feels like painting up a copy of your arms, based on a heraldic description of them, is totally free to do so. Their own rendition will then be protected by copyright law, or it may be registered as a trademark if it's used commercially. Short version: In the United States, you can copyright any specific artistic work, but not the ideas behind it. Anybody else can do their own version of it, and whatever they produce belongs to them.

Well done. There is no such thing as a family crest!

Do many countries have coat of arms that are bound to particular property ?

Matriculation and marticulation are not two pronounciations of the same word, with all due respect. One is a word, the other is not. also, ”candidacy” and ”cadency” are two different, separate terms. It s like saying Gorge Washington or Heraldicity is just your pronunciation. Some words have different pronounciations (potayto=potahtoe, consigliere-consiliere, etc) but these are not.

What about something like houses like for example Mountbatten were there is a crest for the house?

My sigil is the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor. Once it's bestowed upon you, no king, president, lord, or lady can ever take it from you. I have the right to bear the sigil the rest of my life, but it can not be passed on to any other generation, lest they graduate from Parris Island or San Diego, and receive their own EGA. HOWEVER... In the United States of America, you have the right to express yourself however you want, as long as it's peaceful, so wear whatever sigil you want!

Thanks for making this so plain. I can use it to convince the younger of my brothers that he can’t just send in his $30 to grab a set of arms he likes. I’m doing genealogy research on my very Salt of the Earth names. Even so I constantly see on the Family Tree Coats of Arms attached to particularly the first settlers in the US or Canada. I do not copy them because there is no way in the world any of the Wright Coats followed us First son to first son. Made up my personal Arms, refuse to use a Fusile, and use them only in the game I play where there is a registration To the Game!

The people who push that people have a family coat of arms are also those trying to sell them. You know I’ve been trying to say the same thing to people for a long time. And you can only do it politely without coming Across as being something nasty. For too many people take pride in a family it’s sad, but the truth is the people that don’t listen to her also the people that I’m not ready for the truth.
You talked about sons a lot. Can you tell us what daughters can do to obtain their arms? You made it seem like they'll deny anyone who isn't a son (these days).

Their were countries that used arms to represent families
@HeraldryCorner3 жыл бұрын
To a very limited extent. In some areas of the Holy Roman Empire and the Low Countries there were “family” coats of arms, but they were limited to a main line of patrilineal descent. And while the arms may have been shared by many in a family the crests would often change or a tincture would. But the idea of a coat of arms being able to be used by everyone of the same surname has never been a thing, and is definitely not a thing is any form of British isles Heraldry.

In Belgium, the coat of arms is registered as the "Family" Coat of Arms and granted by the official heraldic authority.
