Primer bulb- If anyone is interested, its not a "primer" as this infers injecting fuel into the cylinder, very rare on these things. No, it simply makes a vacuum in the carb which then sucks fuel up and fills the carb so when you pull the cord, it will be ready to inject the fuel/oil mix into the cylinder. Simply to save the pull cord wear and tear from 6 to 12 pulls to usually get a empty carb filled and injecting into the throat. On my aircraft i do have a "Primer" which squirts fuel in and this acts as a choke. Also manual says 50/1 fuel to oil BUT usually they are talking about "branded" special concentrated Echo or stihl 2 stoke oils so in this case? I have a off the shelf stuff and just use around 30/1 just to be safe. not too lean , maybe way too rich, but i seen videos of 50/1 and the bearings and dry and very thin running however the harder engines can take this today i guess... I still use 25/1 on my older machines and never fouled a plug or choked the engine from "flake offs" which they claim can damage the engine. So did they have this trouble in the old days when they used 8/1??

This is a great series of videos. I just picked up a ‘78 xl250s with totally buggered final drive - no splines on the sprocket end. So need to replace the final drive. I’ve never opened up a case like this so am curious if I have to remove clutch basket, flywheel, etc like you did. Or if once the top end is off and and side covers and bolts removed I can just split it and put the new (used) final drive in.

Any advice on removing the bottom cover of timing belt. Especially the bolt right next to alternator. It seems to be just spinning without anything happening.
@hermanbotha14492 ай бұрын
ontop you gearbox bellhousing is an inspection hole , if you look throgh there with a flashlight you will see theres marks on your flywheel to line up the timing exactly and on the rear of the cam pulley is also a mark , line that up to be level with the very top of thecylinder head (on the back side) also have to make sure your tdc on the correct stroke for the distributer timing is not 180 deg out. this is easy to check by noting wich lead is from spark plug number 1 , pop off the dizzy cap and see that the rotor is pointing towards where you noted plug wire nr.1 is. Lastly , when you install the belt start on top , over clockwise down over the crank side pully , making sure theres no slack between the 2 pulleys on the front side , then keep that tension and slip over the rest of belt round bottem pulley , then you use your special tool to tension and then fasten the tensioner locking nut, you must take care not to let the belt slip and cause slack between the 2 pulleys like i explained , and tension it from the back . Very important !!! if you fit the belt the other way around, everything seems good but with sslack in front as soon as you tension the belt , the slack pulls tight and throws your timing out a tooth or 2 or 3 and trust me , a vw motor like that is very bitchy over just half a tooth out. just some tips from a guy who has done it 1000 times. lastly , i dont believe in that 90deg rotate trick on those belts. i tension it just a wee bit tighter than that. peace !!!!

Great how to. Just followed it. One thing - to get the last air chamber in (one that goes to centre two vents) you can remove a small bracket under dash just to the left of steering wheel. 4 x 8mm bolts, with that out the way the chamber goes in easily. You'll need a long extension for 8mm as one is quite far into dash
