Hello, thanks you for your video. We are wondering how to separate the flute from the gourd because it seems to be united. We think that we have the problem you are explaining but we are afraid to broke it. The ring is too strongly holding the bamboo. Do you have a suggestion? Thanks

I am traveling in Asia now, and I can make another video after July 18 to show how to solve the noise. Or you can carefully turn the main pipe left and right, then turn the two side pipes to take them out. If a section is stuck inside, you can use pliers to turn it down, but please wrap a small piece of cloth around the bamboo, and don't use too much force to prevent the pipe from cracking.

We moved the reed but we didn't manage to get the right tune (F hululsi, we tried to have a C on the longest bamboo) we cannot make it deeper because when the reed was too open it didn't make sound no more :/

Lower the reed tongue, may lower the valum. But please carefully touch the reed, you could find something like a needle to change the reed angel.

Hi Mr. Hong! Your videos have been very great and helpful to me starting to learn the Erhu! I have one question, is it okay if I rest the bamboo of the bow on the sound box? I notice some of the stain coming off of the bow onto it and it had me wondering if I am supposed to keep it off or not. Thanks!
@musichong2 ай бұрын
The bow is basically rest on the resonator body, but when you move the bow, it will move slightly when you up and down the bow, which is normal.

Liquan Qin is using the strings the same as the erhu, 利泉琴用的是二胡弦,但是“一弦一品”这个牌子不错,内外五度音准较好。

I do understand, in the past years, I paid a lot of money to find a good erhu, it costs more than $$$$$, never find a perfect one, because it’s not under your control, but Liquan Qin is the one, you can adjust the sound and get sound you want by your ear and the tools.
@dbadagna3 ай бұрын
It's interesting that this erhu doesn't have a wolf tone; my first erhu teacher showed me that this sound usually occurs on the tritone (augmented fourth) above the open outside string.
@dbadagna3 ай бұрын
At 06:10, did you mean to say that you asked the designer to add scales to the back of the snakeskin (as well as the front) in order to improve the instrument's timbre? I always wondered whether the scales had an effect on an erhu's sound. It looks like the synthetic skin on the erhus used by the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra doesn't have scales at all.
@dbadagna3 ай бұрын
If you use the screws to tune the snakeskin "drum" to the same pitch as the inside (low) string, it makes the sound of the erhu better?
@musichong3 ай бұрын

@@musichong That's what you said in the video, but it wasn't my question. I asked if tuning the skin head of the erhu to the same pitch as the inside (low) string makes the sound of the erhu better.

So greateful for your video! I just picked up the Erhu a few hours ago and watched this and a past video to find out the grips, techniques and getting those strong notes to sound out without wavering (it will be quite a while to get that mellow and sophisticated sound). The way you explain makes sense and I was able to overcome issues faster. Never thought about using Chi, however I kind of get it (piano and guitar player). You're a big encouragement and really make the Erhu sing so beautifully, thank you!

Mr Hong I see you use sponge like dampers instead of felt cloth ones am I right or am i just seeing wrong? I was under the impression from the place I bought my erhu that felt cloth dampers are much better than sponges but you are a very experienced player so I dont believe you would make such an easily correctable mistake as using the wrong damper.

Hello mr Hong, i really enjoy your videos! I am still pretty much a beginner erhu player but I have a question on bowing. I tried loosening the bow hair to make my bowing more versatile, its a bit harder but I feel its worth it, I have a problem though when changing from inner to outter string or vice-versa, even though im making a good sound while bowing sometimes when i change string i make a small scratchy sound before i manage to make the bow stroke smooth (this happens mostly from inner to outter string when the bow hair is very loose I have noticed). Are there any tips to make the transition from one string to the other smoother? Like maybe try to change strings when reaching the end of the bow?

Hong 师傅 你好! I just found an old erhu that belonged to my 阿嬤, and I am very excited to learn how to play it since it was in practically perfect condition. I ordered a bow, bridge, damper, and qianjin, but when it came to the tuner i was really confused. This specific erhu (from Shanghai music factory 1) seems to have a fine tuning mechanism in the base of the erhu that is more akin to a violin/viola fine tuning system and I'm really confused on how to string it because it looks like there's very little to stop the string from flying out while playing. I can't find anything on the internet like it! I was wondering if you had seen anything like my description before and if you had any advice. 謝謝師傅!

Also, thank you for sharing your expertise with the world! Your videos have helped me study the erhu extensively so that once the parts come in, I'm not totally blind when i begin. I'm currently a violist and I'm really worried about the difference in bowing.
