Thank you for this video. I just got my first (and cheap) hulusi. It was used, and ended up having some cracks in the gourd around where the flute and drones plug in. The reeds were very dark as well. I could get sound, but it sounded more like a party horn or a flock of geese. I sealed up the crack with some glue, and it seems to be holding, but this video helped me with the rest. I cleaned up the reeds till they were shining, and removed a bit of the edge of one where it kept getting stuck. Then I did your sliding the hobby knife under and bending trick till I could get an even transition on all the notes. The drones even have a nice harmony to them now. With all that done, I just need to practice keeping my breath pressure even when I start blowing, and when I stop. I don't always make that honking noise, but it's still there, and tricky not to do. That breath pressure is SO important to how this instrument sounds. I'm also curious about the bawu, is it about the same to play?

the reed space between the sheet also affects the sound, too high the sound is loud, but you may be lost the high notes, you have to carefully adjust the end of the reed to get the best position, it will sound for all notes.

@@musichong yeah, I found that if the reed is bent up too much...I just get one sound. Like you can't even change the notes. It seems as if the reed has to be ALMOST flat to the plate to be just right. It took me a while to do, I can't play as nicely as you can with the pipe removed...so I had to replace it each time to test. When you play the pipe sideways, it seems just like the bawu with the holes in awkward positions. My other problem, is that my fingers are kinda big. It's tough to cover the holes that are close together on the C hulusi. I wonder if a F or G keyed hulusi would suit me better, they look as if the holes are farther apart.

Thanks very much for posting this. I just received two Bawu's (one transverse and one end-blown). The transverse one had some problems with buzzing and with the low note being "buzzy" and a bit sharp. I'll try some of your techniques.

Hello, thanks you for your video. We are wondering how to separate the flute from the gourd because it seems to be united. We think that we have the problem you are explaining but we are afraid to broke it. The ring is too strongly holding the bamboo. Do you have a suggestion? Thanks

I am traveling in Asia now, and I can make another video after July 18 to show how to solve the noise. Or you can carefully turn the main pipe left and right, then turn the two side pipes to take them out. If a section is stuck inside, you can use pliers to turn it down, but please wrap a small piece of cloth around the bamboo, and don't use too much force to prevent the pipe from cracking.

We moved the reed but we didn't manage to get the right tune (F hululsi, we tried to have a C on the longest bamboo) we cannot make it deeper because when the reed was too open it didn't make sound no more :/

Lower the reed tongue, may lower the valum. But please carefully touch the reed, you could find something like a needle to change the reed angel.
