The life of a performing artist in any time under any conditions is nothing short of challenging. Although I hold two music degrees, I decided to take a more secure route in terms of a steady job. I admire the courage and the dedication of those who followed their true passion. The truth of one's art and performances are rooted in who a person truly is. I have seen Sondra and Jamie perform live and online in videos. You dare to share your truth in all you do, and that is nothing short of admirable and inspiring. I am a huge fan of you both. Long may your careers continue, and countless be the hearts and minds you touch with your talents and truth.

Either Im getting the interviews confused, or it seems like a bunch of conductors have music stuck in their head. Guess it kind of makes sense.

I’m only three years late to this interview! But I’ve seen Tamara Wilson twice in the theater, as Elsa (Lohengrin) and Brunnhilde (Rotterdam, where I spent a day before sailing on a cruise!). She is fantastic! And then I saw some video clips in Trovatore (IIRC), and I recall saying, “now THAT’S an important voice.”

I've been listening to Marilyn Horne since I was 4 years old and she's been my favorite singer since. I am 50 now. It hasn't swayed even though I listen to all types of music. And I appreciate you posting this. I didn't catch it before. A friend brought it up and apparently I missed this one. Thank you.

I really appreciate what she said about directors who love nudity. To me: It's just dishonest. If the director would just openly admit that they're horny, that'd be honest. They don't want to see nudity for art. They just want to see boobs and feel like they were part of it.

I want to know if there was follow up, whether The Divas went to a metal show, or if Mr. Williams went to an opera house? I'd love to know what they thought? I'm a mixed music bag fan myself I've been to the Metropolitan Opera and I've also been to Ozzfest. Incidentally dressed the same way to both: tee shirt and khakis.

I listened to nearly EVERY recording of Asie from Sheherazade by Ravel and the live recording of Isabel Leonard singing that piece is phenomenal. Just wanted to say that. There's always one piece you hear of a singer that "does it" for me!

I appreciate what she said about the romanticization of "the starving artist," how people come to artists and asking for free work for the privilege of exposure is such a dishonest insult. I used to write music ditties for apps and shorts, and someone who I knew personally in my life asked me for something for his business's commercial, but said he couldn't pay me. Meanwhile his Facebook showed his Florida resort vacation from the month before and I couldn't help but feel "I thought we were friends dude."

I know a certain singer known for doing higher counter roles who then did ONE PRODUCTION singing a bit of a lower role as Orfeo and his agent told me he dropped him just from that alone. Unbelievable. Where's the freedom to be versatile? Even a little? Wow I was flabbergasted at that.

This was such a fun discussion I'm glad I stumbled upon it in my YT suggested feed! I had the pleasure of seeing her live in the last concert my grandmother and I saw before she passed. I had JUST gotten my driver's license and I proudly drove grandma to hear James Levine conduct Mahler's 3rd with Stephanie Blythe as the soloist at the Boston Symphony Orchestra. To this day the best live concert I ever heard. Leaving the concert, there was a snow storm that was WAAYY heavier than it was supposed to be. I made it back to Grandma's house and realized how long my drive home would be, and I sheeply suggested "This might be a tough ride home" and she INSTANTLY said "oh you're not driving home in this young man, you're staying at my house tonight!" "Yes, ma'am." So glad to have that memory.

Thank you Greg for talking about your cancer. I'm a breast cancer survivor, going great at 61 after being treated at the age of 37. What gets you through? I'm not a believer in any higher being. As Albert Schweitzer famously said: There are two means of refuge from the miseries of life: music and cats.

37:24. Almost a tenor? If people would understand that you cannot be almost a tenor. You either are a tenor and if you are not you cannot almost be one because tenors are nature freaks! Any other voice that it is not a tenor is far remote from being a tenor. This delusions need to stop.
@KajiVocals
@KajiVocals 9 ай бұрын
Nonsense. You can be a semitone away from tenor.
@beachfanatic2010
@beachfanatic2010 9 ай бұрын
@@KajiVocals A tenor has absolutely nothing to do with any other voice type - especially any other male voice. You are either a tenor or you are not. A baritone no matter how high they can sing is an orange and a tenor would be a mango. Tenors are extremely rare and they are really maybe 1% of the male population if not less. Stop with this non sense about “I was almost a tenor”. It does not exist. And even if you are a tenor, in order to sing opera like God demands for real opera to be sung - that real tenor has to put in so very much work in a supernatural level cause it is very difficult for us to maintain the straight up circus FREAK tessitura that these composers wanted.
@KajiVocals
@KajiVocals 9 ай бұрын
@@beachfanatic2010 I recommend you to read Potter’s Tenor: A Voice and Marek’s book on Rubini. You desperately need it. And nonsense. Tenors are not that rare. Bass, now that’s rare.
@beachfanatic2010
@beachfanatic2010 9 ай бұрын
@@KajiVocals Tenors by evolution are rare. That book is not a Bible. It probably is written by a baritone or some wannabe tenor. By evolution men have deeper voices. Some deeper than others but that is basic male evolution. So according to you men evolved to have high voices? I bet it impresses the ladies.
@KajiVocals
@KajiVocals 9 ай бұрын
@@beachfanatic2010 That is a non-argument. Educate yourself on the voice. Tenor is a wide spectrum that covers voices with F♯ to A passaggi. That’s a wide category. To say that Lauritz Melchior is a high voice is delusional. To say that even Placido Domingo has a high voice is delusional. Tenor is a category that encompasses more than one type of voice, just like soprano or baritone or bass or contralto and so on… And I am not talking about operatic categories, those are man-made roles.
@beachfanatic2010
@beachfanatic2010 10 ай бұрын
He is just a baritone that ascents higher into falsetto notes. Simple. There is absolutely nothing tenor about your voice. Falsetto does not count to classify.

Finally saw Brian yesterday at the Met (in Forza). Wow! He and Lise Davidsen brought the house down. And something about social media videos was confirmed: great singers sound FAR better live onstage in the theater. One of the clips was from the new Forza, and some viewers were ripping him to shreds. And I’m going, “No, no, he sounds fantastic in the theater!” Same with Sondra, whose voice rides the wind in the theater; but on these awful clips, not so much. (P.S. I saw Birgit three times; she did not sound like her records - the voice was much warmer than the trumpet you hear on those over-engineered records). So it just goes to show ya.

Noooooo! Don't ever feel guilty for singing The Queen when you are the best! The very first time I heard Ms. Lewek sing the role she instantly became my all-time favorite exactly because of the meat in her voice. She's a queen, not a canary. Finally, someone who could sing the second aria and sound pissed off and scary. I'm also very much looking forward to hearing you in new roles.

Hello. I have only recently discovered your channel. I am enjoying these videos! I'm new to the appreciation of opera. I love hearing from the two of you and the artists you interview. Hearing about various artists' journeys in the world of opera is interesting. I also love it when you talk about your voices, warming up, knowing your individual voice, etc (discussion of voice). Thank you for providing a glimpse into the world of the opera artist.

@@ScreamingDivas Have already saved loads of your interviews, like with Thomas Hampson for example, for catch up listening!! Also wanted to say, loving different versions of "In Questa Reggia" by the likes of Dame Eva Turner and Birgit Nilsson, when I heard this recording of you, Miss Radvanovsky, that this is the version I've been waiting for, for years - you are the Turandot of these times for sure!!!! You absolutely own!!!! this aria 💜. Not only do you sing the aria with perfection, both soft notes and ringing high notes, but you become Turandot, with facial expressions and gestures, and the audience see why Turandot is the way she is, because of what happened to her ancestor. Watching you become Turandot here has the same effect on me as watching Callas become Tosca: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gaKbYpKVZcmoqsksi=2lHyCLKDMAUaLpNJ

@@ScreamingDivas Thank you so much for taking the time to reply personally, Sondra and Keri!!! Have told my Mum and daughter who are both opera lovers about your channel and also your lovely reply!!!! My daughter aged 17 started listening to Callas, (what a perfect place to get into opera!!!), and I was able to then play her lots of other legendary singers, Nilsson, Norman, Caballe, Sutherland, your recording of In Questa Reggia, Horne, Flagstad (she seems to prefer female singers at the moment!!) She has been listening to opera tutorials and we just recorded the Habanera on my channel (am a self taught piano noodler) As a life long opera lover, I love it that there is now a third generation of opera lover in our family!!! My daughter has now fallen in love with opera for herself and perhaps she might have some vocal lessons too!!!
