Electricity Crisis: Ecuador relies heavily on hydroelectric power for around 72% of its electricity, but a severe drought has drastically reduced hydroelectric output. This has forced the country to turn to thermal power plants, which depend on diesel to generate electricity. The increased demand for diesel to compensate for electricity generation shortfalls has strained supply chains Supply and Logistics Issues: Diesel imports have not been sufficient to meet the heightened demand caused by power generation needs and everyday consumption. Moreover, logistical bottlenecks, such as delays in procurement and distribution, are exacerbating the problem Economic Pressures: The Ecuadorian government, which heavily subsidizes diesel to keep it affordable for consumers, is under financial strain. The ongoing energy crisis and associated economic losses (such as from blackouts) have reduced the government’s ability to manage the diesel supply effectively

I like the two of you; you seem nice and your analysis is spot-on. I recently became familiar with Danner “quarries” because of work. I have never had extra money to spend on work boots, so have always settled for Walmart crap; which always meant that I was miserable by lunchtime, with sore feet, knowing I still had hours left in the day. But my most recent job required vibram soles, for fire resistance, and a minimum 8 inch top. They also offered a “boot-stipend,” to cover the cost; which was quite generous of them. I live and work in the Sierras, and Reno is the only big town for many miles. I shopped around, and settled on Danner, because, although it still exceeded the stipend, I could cover the balance without financial ruin, you know? I was surprisingly impressed. The leather was tough; and the boot was comfortable. Up and down hillsides all day, lugging a saw and gas; dragging limbs and rounds and piling brush and crap; I was ok all day. Mine did not spit on the inside liner at the heal as yours did; however, I did have problems- mainly, the padding, or whatever it is, directly under your foot, you know, like along the whole bottom of your foot- I wore that out until it was mush; nothing left, especially under the heel and big toe, and ball of your foot. So eventually, it felt like my foot was just stomping all day on that hard rubber vibram stuff. I stuffed in some of those inserts you can buy; it helped, but eventually they wore in the same places, and I need to buy some more. I haven’t bought “dr schools,” or whatever tf, I just buy knock-offs, and can get a few months work out of them. Now, my work is seasonal, always in the summer, and I was expecting all kinds of trench foot and crap from sweat, but suffered no such calamity, fortunately. Probably, as you said, because the boots are not watertight. However, it’s winter now, and I would like to be able to wear these in the snow. And, as you said, your toes become miserably cold and wet after ten paces in less than a couple of inches, haha! I am going to experiment with different waterproofing stuff, see if I can’t find a way to winterize these boots. Oh, one more thing. I wore the soles of these boots. Danner says they will replace them, free of charge. I did not believe them, because the world is rotten with lies. So I had them replaced by someone else, cost me a hundred fifty bucks. It was worth it to me, because the boots are so well broken in. But maybe someone, maybe you guys, should try it out, and see if Danner will really do that, you know? Best to you two

I've lived in Ecuador more than 5 years. My spanish learning has been slow. I can carry on simple conversations. Some people understand me pretty well. Others, not at all. It's like you described, you feel like you say it perfectly, yet they don't understand. I think it's because of "tildes" (accents). They are super important in Spanish. In English, somewhat, but not written or emphasized. I haven't learned them very well. Maracuyá (passion fruit). MaracuYA. Really important for folks to understand what you are saying. My experience is that educated people seem to understand me better. Kichwa speakers don't understand me at all. Their Spanish is very different. Therefore, they don't understand me.

My 2-month exploratory trip to Ecuador is in just a few months. I don't expect it'll be too different from what my 2-month exploratory trip to Colombia was, but you never know. Honestly, I didn't run into that many issues. I landed, took a bus to a village, got a room, went out once a day to eat my meal and take a walk, and that was pretty much it. When I changed villages I'd just ask the taxi to bring me to the park. I did have one hotel with incredibly bad service (they actually forgot I existed, left, and locked me in the hotel, alone) and admittedly most of these people just don't give a fudge about anything, but it's not too difficult to get what you need even with almost no Spanish and no phone.
@tinyhandsbigdreams4 күн бұрын
I think it probably depends on what you're looking for in a trip, and what areas you are exploring. We've definitely had better luck with decent Spanish and a working phone, that's for sure!

Hi! Thanks for taking the time to make this list. I'm considering buying a property in Ecuador next year with the main goal of either reforesting some degraded land or protecting an existing piece of rainforest and creating a little homestead similar to yours. I just found your channel and it's such a good source of information. Keep up the good work!

We're looking forward to your Live Show 😁 Well, John will be there. I'm at work online till 8. Ill jump over to your channel then and see if The Show is still going ! We are leaning more toward Paraguay than Ecuador due to the simplicity of gaining residence and also due to its general conservative and hands-off stance/culture of the peoples and government. We love Ecuador. We like the climate much better, and the look of the landscape. We know that this is very important. I might understand your anxiety to do a live show. I've begun teaching English as a second language online to strangers (in Japan) of all ages. I never know "who I'm gonna get" or what I'm gonna need to know or say. Most terrifying for me. Shelley

Great Fix and team effort with your Son ! That kid is going to have great memories and stories to tell his grandkids when he is old. Just a thought, maybe ye should work on finishing one or two small rooms on the house first instead of doing it all at together. I mean when you can afford a few sheets of tin or Galvalume for the roof maybe you should finish one or two rooms completely, walls etc. The simple Rooms without plumbing or even electric. Just so ye can get out of the Tents etc. Then ye can finish the house piece by piece as finances and time allow. I mean your house is kinda large and is going to take a while to finish. Just a thought ! Maybe ye can get out of the Tents and into more comfort sooner. Maybe I am missing something here as I usually am. Great work and cool video Guys !
@tinyhandsbigdreams9 күн бұрын
Thanks! We've considered doing just that, but logically it would potentially be MORE work. And the roof panels have to be layed in a specific order to shed water correctly. The house site it a good bit up the hill from our current location, which would be a hoof in the dark to go to bed. At least right now, we're all in one spot (with the bathroom!). If we get desperate with tents, we could go that option, though.

As a former shoe cobbler, if you’re going to use glue on something like that, of course use compatible glue, but when you can’t find the specialized glues, then use contact cement. (Which is flexible), There were so many times that people used something like crazy glue, (which is like using PVC glue) on something flexible and it would crack around the edges because the glue wasn’t flexible. If you don’t have glue and you just want to get something in place, you can use cotton duck material sewn in, Kind of like Carhartt pants are made out of, and at the right angle, It will shed water and not drip inside the tent. (Unless you touch it inside. Of course, if you have cotton in the jungle, it likes to rot since it’s natural fiber.. Also don’t forget to overlap it like house shingles so water drips off of one piece of fabric onto the next.
@tinyhandsbigdreams9 күн бұрын
Yes, there are likely much more ideal ways to patch tents. But this works with what we could easily (and cheaply) find locally. The tents don't need to be taken down or moved, so being stiff it's really a concern. It wouldn't work as well, obviously, if you were going to be packing up and moving often! Unfortunately, we're past the point of sewing being enough on it's own. It worked for a while but now the fabric of the tent is too thin to hold stitches (without glue) so that option is out. Ah yes, we do have plastic over the tents as a roof, so water is less of an issue! Thanks, though!

Don't they sell plastic by the meter over there? Greetings from Guayaquil.
@tinyhandsbigdreams10 күн бұрын
Yes! We have black plastic as a 'roof' over our tents to protect them from heavy rains, but we've had to replace those many times as well. Plastic just breaks down quickly here in the sun.

Perhaps we can skip the blower part altogether by having the pile sit on top of a 20-40cm base of woody material (twigs and the like) and sticking a perforated pipe vertically in the center. Hopefully, natural convection will do the rest passively especially if the bottom layers of the pile are not compacted.

@ Hi hi! My life story is the same, mostly auto immune symptoms. I was a wreck as a child. I have tamed those wild horses with knowledge, just like you. No judgment here. When I baby is born with those sweet tiny legs, and a dime size kneecap; the child has no blood vessels to the kneecap, just like enamel. The kneecap is nourished by proteins and minerals that it bathes in. I have added macro minerals and micro minerals to my intake since I was 19. I had two"holes" before then, none since. I'm now in my sixties. See my add on comments. There is also a gum that is very effective. To your health!😊

Also curious about gardening woes. Have you considered that your plants might be getting too much rain? Did you research what grows well there so you can start easy mode? What soil amendments would you like to do but can't afford or get ahold of? I hope the compost works.
