Hi. I sent the clarification. My name is Obi Ojimadu. The moral of the story, as explained by Mike Ejeagha, is: Be mindful when you join a friend on an errand.

You got it wrong, Sir! LET ME GIVE YOU THE DETAILS OF THE STORY (SONG): The title of the song is "Onye Isi Oche" (Chairman of Occasion) by Gentleman Mike Ejeagha. The song was released in 1983. It's an Igbo Cultural Folktale Music about the deceitful tortoise and the foolish elephant. In the story, long time ago when humans and animals dwelt together, the King of a certain united Animal/Human kingdom puts his Daughter up for marriage but the lady insisted that her wedding gift to be added to her bride price must an Elephant she will often ride on its back when she feels like. So the tortoise as a clever animal went to the elephant, his friend and lied to him that a party is about to start at the king's palace and the king has assigned only the Elephant to be the Chairman of the ceremony. The elephant was happy agreed to go with the tortoise. On their way to the party the elephant complained that tortoise is too slow. And the tortoise pleaded with the elephant to carry him at the back and the elephant accepted and tortoise pleaded also to tie a rope in the neck of the elephant and use it to climb and the elephant accepted too. So, the tortoise did as foretold. On getting closer to the king's palace, the Tortoise shouted that he has brought the elephant as the wedding gift/bride price.... which is the song and its relics... That's how the elephant was captured and tortoise married the kings daughter. The song was recently rekindled by a Nigerian Comedian, Brain Jotter and it's been trending. So, the chasing aspect was added by brain jotter to create a trend and fun. The man who chases is the one who dance first and the imitator runs.

This style of music is known as “oral storytelling with a song” and is a sophisticated style where igbo proverbs come into play in a massive way. It is a very old song he released back in the 70s and 80s. Tortoise is very central in Igbo folklores. Slow and steady wins the race! 😊

You listened to the wrong interpretation. The story is: In a kingdom where humans and animals lived together, the Princess kept refusing all marriage suitors including the tortoise, and told the worried king that the man that would marry her should bring the elephant so that she would be riding on its back during festivals. The tortoise went and told the elephant that the King is organising the Ofala festival and has appointed the elephant the chairman of the occasion. The elephant was so happy and hoped rhat would give him a chance to ask for the hand of the princess. He promised to come and lead him to the festival. On the fateful day, the tortoise tricked the elephant to let him ride on his back since he is small and slow, so they would get to the occasion on time. He asked the elephant to permit him to put a rope around the neck so he could climb and hold on tight. As they got there, the villagers were shouting in excitement, and the tortoise sang 'my king, I have brought the elephant'. The elephant asked what he was saying, and the tortoise lied that he said, 'Let the land guide and protect the elephant, the elephant is the festival chairman, so elephant, go ahead, we are behind you'..... Finally, the king gave his daughter's hand in marriage to the tortoise as he brought the elephant according to the challenge. Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo is the description of the loud trembling noise made on the ground by the walking elephant. In Igbo folklore, the tortoise is regarded as the wisest and most cunny of all animals.

The song is about an elephant and a turtle. It tells the story of how the mighty elephant was tricked by the little turtle. Deceit and trickery involve deliberately misleading or fooling others through false information or manipulative actions. Deception refers to the act of encouraging people to believe information that is not true. It can range from small white lies to large-scale fabrications.

The person that interpreted this story for you is doesn't know what he/she is saying. Many men where coming for the princess hand in marriage and she turned them all down including the tortoise whom they even chase away with pistle. So the king called a meeting to ask the daughter why she rejects every suitor coming for her and she said she wants a man that will bring a tethered elephant to ask for her hand in marriage so that when she rides it on the festival she will standout amongst the rest. So the tortoise being the friend of the elephant went to him and lied to him that the igwe wants him to be the chairman of occasion of the upcoming offala festival and the elephant was very happy. On the day of the offala festival the tortoise deliberately went late to the house of the elephant, so when he got there the elephant was furious at the tortoise for making him late considering being the chairman of the occasion, so the tortoise suggested to him to carry him on his back so they can get to their destination fast which the elephant agreed and the tortoise again demanded that he tie a rope around the elephant neck to allow him climb yo the back which the elephant agreed. On getting to the occasion he took the tether/rope and handed it to the king and then the dialogue of the chorus ensued CHORUS -Nnam eze akpata m enyi(tortoise) My king i have brought the tethered elephant -Isi n'kpata onye (elephant) Tortoise who did you say you brought? -Asim ani ya dube enyi chebe enyi odi kam siri na akpatam enyi. ( tortoise) I said let the gids of the land guide and protect the elephant but you misheard it to mean i brought a tethered elephant.................

the song is all about the kings daughter that refused to marry all the suitors coming for her hand in marriage. her father the king later called a family meeting so that the family members would ask the princess why she had refused all the suitors coming to marry her. the princess later opened up that any person that would marry her must capture the elephant so that whenever she wants to move around she can climb on the elephant and everyone would know that she's indeed a princess. the tortoise had gone initially to seek the hand of the king's daughter in marriage, he was practically thrown out of the palace. when the tortoise heard the new development about what the princess said, the tortoise in his craftiness went & lied to the elephant who happened to be his friend that the king wants to give him(the elephant) a chieftaincy title. the elephant was so happy that on the said day for the coronation the tortoise had already arranged with the king the day he would bring his price & marry the princess. as his friend the tortoise was to escort the elephant to the coronation ground. the tortoise intentionally came late to the elephant house which elephant complained bitterly about. so on their was the tortoise in his characteristics manner of walking slowly asked the elephant to allow him to use the rope he was holding to tie him on his back so that he can climb on his back for the elephant to carry him. the already agitated elephant that was also hoping that the chieftaincy title that would be conferred on him would give him leverage to marry the princess speedily agreed to the tortoise proposal because he was already complaining about the tortoise sluggish movement not knowing that the tortoise was tying him as a bride price for him to marry the princess. the tortoise finally tied the rope & climbed on the back of the elephant. as they were approaching the palace the tortoise started singing the song (nnam eze akpatam enyi... meaning my king I've captured the elephant). elephant not knowing the plans of the tortoise asked the tortoise what he meant by he has captured the elephant. the tortoise lied that it was a slip of tongue that he wanted to say that the land should protect the elephant. so when they got to the palace the tortoise came down from the back of the elephant & handed the rope to the king & told him that this is what he has brought to marry the princess. so that was how the tortoise married the princess. and the lesson from the song is that one should be careful about deceptive friends. thanks & that's the interpretation of the song
