Why do you drill the hole is segments rather than drilling all the way through while the bamboo is still straight?
@fushimiurushikobo Жыл бұрын
Very good question. What happens when you drill a hole in the bamboo while it is still straight and then bend it? You can see by bending the straw. It can be bent, but the hole is crushed.
Hello. Great video. Can you tell me why boil bamboo in caustic soda and citric acid? Thank you.

Is this still jinoko? It looks slightly finer? Thanks.

I also wonder what this mix is made of. I've seen other honkataji explainations where they use a mix of tonoko and jinoko for the second ground (and they mix it wi ki-urushi instead of nuri-urushi as the author of the video shows for the first ground layer).

He actually explains in the comments of a later video. The powder is indeed finer.

Arigato gozaimasu for another excellent video. Is the trex 70 made from silk? Do you turn your own bowls? Thank you.

What is the reason for using nori-urushi at all? I guess it is to (1) provide a solid core at the base of the hairs to provide some stiffness, but also (2) to prevent harder urushi from soaking down into the hake? Also, is that a simple detergent in the small bottle or some other kind of solvent? Thanks for your time and consideration.
Sir. I have a stand of large bamboo near me and would love to try making my own Chopsticks. How long would I have to let the bamboo dry before making my own set? Thank you so much for this video series.
@fushimiurushikobo2 жыл бұрын
I let the bamboo dry for a couple of years before making chopsticks and spoons. This is because the lacquer needs to dry sufficiently to finish it. If you are not going to lacquer it, there is no need to dry it. Some people make chopsticks from freshly cut bamboo. It is called green bamboo chopsticks. Wishing you good work.

Hi! What do you apply on the spoon at 5:10 ? Why do you do it? Thank you for your videos!
@fushimiurushikobo2 жыл бұрын
It's a polishing powder called Tonoko. Make fine scratches on the surface to prevent the lacquer from peeling off.

What kind of cloth do you use to wipe the lacquer off the spoons?
@fushimiurushikobo2 жыл бұрын
Any cloth can be used as long as it is not fluffy.

If I understand correctly, urushi and it’s derivatives have to be applied in layers to allow for proper curing. Do you ever experience problems with delamination of the layers?
@fushimiurushikobo2 жыл бұрын
The purpose of applying multiple coats of lacquer, in my personal opinion, is to beautify the finish and add value. Three coats of lacquer are enough to give it the strength to be used. Lacquer has been used as an adhesive since ancient times. You know "kintsugi," the art of repairing pottery. Therefore, there is no concern about peeling off if the paint is applied correctly.

Because you’ve manipulated the spoons with heat and water, will heat during use cause them to loose their shape in the future?
@fushimiurushikobo3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching my video so intently. Actually, they are simmered, heated and cooled so that they don't lose shape in the future. The first thing to do is to simmer it to soften the fibers so they won't break. Next, roast it to shrink the fibers and bend them. Finally, cool the shrunken fibers with cold water to prevent them from returning to their original shape.

Maestro What is the reason that you carve the spoon hollow on the outside of the bamboo, rather than on the inside? I have some giant bamboo pieces and would like to give it a try. I only wish I was not so allergic to urushiol. Your work is inspirational.
