The important thing to remember if run out of time to think, is always turn in the direction of the protected side, in other words, turn to the direction where the holding pattern is depicted

Check out PAFM on a sectional. Go north. I use this area to describe how echo airspace is built around airports with instrument approaches, and how much of the US was like this when there were only a third of the approaches we have today. Excellent video. Your friendly neighborhood Arctic CFI.

Sir, here's the problem (please notice I said The problem not Your problem, as numerous videos by numerous ppl result in mixed clarity and confusion) 1. Sheppard, Prepware, etc. are teaching rote memorization to pass the written, no matter how noble their sales pitch sounds. 2. The CFII shouting next to you is more concerned with not hitting the ground or any other damn thing, so it's less like training and more liked passive/aggressive panicked concern for life. &3. At some point we will be solo wondering where we are while watching the fuel deplete and trying to remember VOR/CDI/ HSI teaching. In our own concern for life (and property) all this perceived confusion will force us to stare at the GPS to confirm we are on the pink line. So realistically the only ones that will use this lesson info will be those that have flown for 20+ years and were taught it before GPS. Until all parties are willing to admit this the confusion and frustration will continue to kill pilots.
@Loves2Fly3 ай бұрын
Great points. We have become a generation of GPS users. Because of the accuracy of WAAS gps, it is inevitable that most land based systems will diminish in use save a few airports designated as “MON” In other words- backup land based airports for when satellites are jammed. The accuracy of gps owes its use to a peaceful world. Not to long ago, the military would not allow the satellites to be publicly WAAS accurate due to the possibility of the enemy also using the same systems. BTW your CFI should not be shouting at you lol.
@GJar-uz1rv3 ай бұрын
Yes Sir. As a former computer network engineer, all I ask is that the aviation industry pick one solution, either embrace digital navigation, which now has several redundancies, or fix the complication and confusion issues with the VOR/ HSI system OR (my personal favorite) add an ability to both digital and VOR solutions to communicate with each other thereby implementing dual redundancy using two proven systems within an affordable cost (and that's as compared to the cost of human life in the air and on the ground). In this solution, o early expensive flight training becomes cheaper as time is saved in the elimination of teaching arcane and confusing topics.
@GJar-uz1rv3 ай бұрын
ppl r getting confused with the direction of the drawn aircraft, it's frustrating as hell@ If the direction cannot be determined with this instrument, STOP drawing an aircraft, instead, draw a dot and emphasize the non-directional nature of your analytic results!
@Loves2Fly3 ай бұрын
The best fix for this is to have an OBS and an additional HSI which shows VOR the arrow(pointer), which will always point to the VOR regardless of airplane orientation.
