We want that skylight for our crafter -- but is it really okay to cut that support strut across top? How does that work (as in is it reinforced simply by the skylight?). thanks!

You planning on bed going across? I did it in my MWB, yet it’s still unusual to see in a LWB. Really like it though, will give your van a very spacious feel.

I’ve been using LLL Parts for genuine VW. Found them hit and miss on prices compared to dealer. But, for the extra few quid VW get everything in 48hrs whereas I’ve been waiting 3 weeks for a £30 vacuum pump from LLL which was only £36 from VW 😄

Progress is progress. 😀 If I am doing the math right, the overage was less then 15 percent, plus, less then the cost for used stated in the video, so seems you all did just dandy. Additionally, some items might have come due in the future. By the way, I rather be cold and deal with the rain than the triple digit temperatures and humidity we been having here in Arizona. Trying to rebuild a Volkswagen 1200cc engine for Dad's 1964 Beetle at this time.

Cant wait to see you straightening the leg need to be jiged and pulled if you hire a 10 tone hydraulic ram you might have chance dont right them off for nothing try to heat up leg ass you pull and look at old bumper think off inpact looks like central so it will push legs together panel beater for 20 years loads of jig time hope it goes well easyer with engine out

Thanks! I need to show folks what the van cost vs. Buying a non-damaged one. We paid about £10k less than the same van, spec, mileage, colour without a Cat-S title. Looking like it’s going to cost 13-14k all in so we should be still 3-4k saved against a non-damaged one (praying - haha).

The airbags didn't go off? that is very lucky, may have been a good idea to get the engine running first before doing other work and ordering expensive parts.
@CrafterCamper
@CrafterCamper Жыл бұрын
Yeah, really lucky - the steering wheel airbag is still the original and the seatbelt hasn’t locked in place! Engine runs but I can’t attach the rad pack, etc. until the bumper bar is on as it sits on that (and I can’t attach the bumper bar because of the N/S Chassis Member being left by an inch). All fun and games!

@CrafterCamper
@CrafterCamper Жыл бұрын
It’s not very far out of line, maybe 1 inch. Now I’ve stripped down the front it’s clear where the bend in the side member is so it should be fairly simple to straighten or replace with a new section (about a foot). The saving grace on it is that it’s not pushed back at all, just pulled towards the centre of the van. The rest of the van is all in line according to the diagrams and dimensions provided by VW.
@PatrickSwayzeOnDbol
@PatrickSwayzeOnDbol Жыл бұрын
I'd put that on a jig and straighten the leg with a dozer. I've got almost 25yrs in the panel beating and vehicle refinishing trade.
@CrafterCamper
@CrafterCamper Жыл бұрын
Hey - can’t find anyone who will take it on, most accident repair places will only do insurance work and the body shops seem to just do panel and paint type repairs so don’t have the equipment. Spoken to VW who said the easier way to do it is to drill out the spot welds, remove the section of leg and replace it with a new one - around £400+VAT and includes the end plate I also needed to bend back.
@PatrickSwayzeOnDbol
@PatrickSwayzeOnDbol Жыл бұрын
@@CrafterCamper Only backstreet bodyshops will do that repair work nowadays in my opinion. I have worked in those type of places since 2002, always putting out better work than main dealer or high profile shops that are paid by the hour. I was trained extremely well as an apprentice by top 5 guys in my area (Cornwall), always give our customers factory standard finishes, if not better, plus I wouldn't rip anyone off. I have even done quite a few salvage repairs (I live right next to vehicle recyclers/salvage), straighten chassis legs, and even replacement when going through insurance. Proper panel beating is a dying trade, insurance would rather write off and pay out at your expense of higher premium. Sorry for long reply :)
