So many fond memories of Kircubbin in the 1950s. Lovely to see my late father's chemist shop, now McKeevers, next to the Village Inn. Prior to dad opening the chemist shop in 1953, this was a shoe shop . As the nearest hospital was about 20 miles away in Belfast, I witnessed many emergency surgeries performed on the chemist shop floor. One I recall was a butcher who mistook his arm for a side of meat. Another was a pig farmer who forgot that pigs can bite like a shark. Good old doctor Graham , who lived near the harbour, would arrive in minutes to patch up the casualties and get them to hospital. Every year there was a fancy dress parade where the children marched up and down Main St, through the green where the curate was hung, to a flat area near Monaghan's Bank where the judges would pick a winner. I have a photo of myself winning in 1953 dressed as Sir Edmond Hillary with a couple of baby food tins strapped to my back as oxygen cylinders. I have a photo of the fancy dress winner in another year dressed as a clockface on a stick of rock candy. Her caption said "Rock around the Clock". Her paper outfit got ripped as the parade passed our chemist shop so my late mother saved her day with a roll of sticky tape to patch her up. We owned the first and only television in Kircubbin in 1953, a 9 inch Bush-Simpson black and white. Very small compared to today's big screen tellys, but there were no others so nobody considered it small. I recall huge numbers of Kircubbinites coming into our home to watch the Queen's coronation on that little tv in 1953. They used to dredge the harbour occasionally so a steamship could get in with its load of coal. Trucks would then reverse along the harbour wall to be loaded and then take the coal to a yard in Main St. Our family migrated to Australia in 1959. All are deceased so I am the last man standing and my memories will die with me.

Thank you for watching Tom, I've watched many of your videos too, excellent stuff. Sometimes its hard to dig out the "real" history, can't trust Wikipedia and history is written by the victors and some say a bunch of lies agreed upon. Many buildings have no access and others are long gone, making the story telling difficult at times. Still our wee country is fascinating, long history, many invasions and in places sublime and beautiful, that is what I endeavour to show. Best wishes, Steve.

Bangor, North Wales is very different to Bangor Northern Ireland! I like the walled garden and fountain must be wonderful when operating. The museum was very interesting. I have my grandfather's medals and a few bits and bobs in a box. He served during WW1 with the Shropshire Light Infantry as a Gunner. He was the sole survivor in his brigade and because he got wounded in his thumb by a bullet and was transferred to a hospital as unable to fire his gun. Also, have a large knife, but unsure of the history on it, other than he brought it back from France ( no identification on it ).

South Stacks has 400 steps down to the lighthouse on Anglesey, steep, twisty and can be very windy. Thank you for watching. Ah the old name of the city ploy lol. Well its very simple the city was built by the London Livery companies and on the original plans was named Londonderry. With the demographic change caused by the Troubles the majority British (Ulster Scots/English) vacated the city. The modern majority are now Irish. The Irish majority council changed its name to Derry council, hating all things British. In 2007 a court case ruled that the city could not be re-named and so by law it remains Londonderry much to the Irish displeasure. Sad to see that hatred, deep rooted in 77 years of atrocities cannot in modern times be overcome. Hope that helps somewhat. Glad you enjoyed it regardless of the name controversy.
