Welcome to Castlewellan, Northern Ireland, a place steeped in rich history and breathtaking natural beauty.
Nestled in the heart of County Down, Castlewellan boasts a fascinating origin dating back to the 17th century when it was established as a planned market town by the Annesley family. Its name is derived from the Irish "Caisleán Uidhilín," meaning "Uidhilín's Castle," referencing a fortification built by the Maginnis clan in the area.
Over the centuries, Castlewellan has witnessed pivotal moments in Irish history, from battles to the rise of industry. Today, remnants of its past can be explored in the form of historic landmarks such as the majestic Castlewellan Castle, a stunning example of Scottish baronial architecture, and the charming Market House.
However, Castlewellan's allure extends far beyond its historical roots. Surrounded by the serene beauty of the Mourne Mountains and nestled beside the tranquil Castlewellan Lake, this picturesque town offers a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts.
Explore the sprawling Castlewellan Forest Park, home to lush woodlands, meandering trails, and the world-renowned Peace Maze, a symbol of Northern Ireland's journey to reconciliation. Marvel at the vibrant hues of the arboretum, which boasts an impressive collection of exotic trees and plants from around the globe.
Adventure seekers will find endless opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding amidst the stunning backdrop of the Mournes. Meanwhile, those seeking tranquillity can simply bask in the serenity of the lakeside, surrounded by the symphony of nature.
Whether you're a history buff, nature lover, or thrill-seeker, Castlewellan offers a perfect blend of past and present, making it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the beauty of Northern Ireland. Join us as we uncover the wonders of Castlewellan, where history and natural splendour intertwine to create an unforgettable experience.

It really is! The Forest Park is very popular and has a tranquil trek around the lake. The trough is left over from old market days when they sold livestock I believe. Thanks for watching.
