Where do you get your containers, and what sort of plastic do you use for the top cover? It looks a bit like a shower curtain. Your mini nucs look like so much fun to deal with!
@bennybeekeeperКүн бұрын
I make the boxes myself by cutting down larger polystyrene boxes. I’ve got a video on it. For the plastic cover I was using tablecloth which works well but I have just started using greenhouse plastic which is a bit cheaper and seems to work well also. Shower curtain is similar to the tablecloth material I think

Wish my bees were that calm. Several of my hives are no fun at all - when I lift the lid they fly straight for my head and I can hear them yelling,”Bear!” So, I am fully suited and they’re harder to work. Do you have hives like that?

That first ones wings looked damaged. I gotta ask why the minis? Hobby in the back yard or you running a sizable number of these things? Varroa is a pita with these things. Basically they crash and just gotta restock em next round.

@bennybeekeeper2 күн бұрын
That is something im going to have to give more thought to. There’s no product registered for this type of hive that I’m aware of. I was thinking about using OAV but that’s not registered here either. I might be able to give a small dose of one of the thymol products. It’s going to be interesting to see how these hives are affected by varroa. It’s getting closer by the day

@jasonrasheed7670Күн бұрын
I'll be following your lead Ben. Agree, it will be interesting managing varroa in these minis. On the upside, the count will be lower because there are barely any drone cells layed up and varroa prefer the larger cell size.
@bennybeekeeperКүн бұрын
Yes I think that is an important point. Without drone brood the varroa will take a lot longer to build up numbers

Hi Ben. I think you've mentioned it before in a couple of vids, but what nutritional additive do you put in your sugar syrup and where you source it please?
@bennybeekeeper4 күн бұрын
Hi Jason. In some cases I do put hivealive in but I’m not at the moment. It causes more bees to drown in the feeder. I was using it as a preservative but now I just try and use all the feed as quickly as possible so it doesn’t spoil. I buy hivealive from Nuplas when I do buy it
@jasonrasheed76704 күн бұрын
Okay, hivealive great thank you 👍. To stop my syrup spoiling I add about a half tsp of apple cider vinegar to a 3litre mix of sugar syrup, plus a half tsp of Apiary Boost or Ultra Bee pollen substitute and mix in. In terms of a pollen sub, I think you use Vitahive, as it's a premix pattie. Is that correct?
@bennybeekeeper4 күн бұрын
Yes that’s right. I have tried making my own but they don’t seem to use it as well. I find they throw some out the front and some on the bottom board. The pre made ones they use better
@jasonrasheed76704 күн бұрын
@bennybeekeeper Thank you. The recipe for Apiary Boost says equal parts by weight of pollen powder & white sugar, plus 2:1 sugar syrup mixed into a paste. I also add a bit of lemon rind into my syrup, plus a cutting of fresh thyme & a few grains of rock salt. They can't suck it down fast enough!
@danielcollins96285 күн бұрын
When u feed to boost for pollination do u just use sugar syrup or pollen patties as well?
@bennybeekeeper5 күн бұрын

Love the long hive. What is the plan for them ? Just to keep queens for sale or later in season or ? And what is the procedure for when getting then on normal hives after ? Was thinking deep box with one drawn come shake som bees in and put queen on drawn comb and the excluder on top and an empty box where u could habg all the small frames to hatch and move dawn and then remove after 21 days and voila? Judt ordered 10 boxes and winter will build 20 long hives to add to my mini mating nucs just luke shown. Thanks for the share 😊😊
@bennybeekeeper5 күн бұрын
I use the mini nucs to produce queens for my own use and some for sale. This long mini is just a slightly larger version for overwintering but I can overwinter the 6 frame version as well. I don’t have any need to convert them to langstroth gear. I just keep these going all year round

How many hives do u need to get into pollination ??
@bennybeekeeper7 күн бұрын
There’s no minimum number. My first time I had about 12 and they went in the orchard in a load with other small loads all on one site. It all depends how far away from the orchard you are and whether it’s financially worthwhile

Hello nice video ! I want to ask you about having hard time for the grafs to get accepted. Is it because I am choosing very small larvae comma shape ? What is the best age and shape of the larvae for grafting ? Thank you
@bennybeekeeper13 күн бұрын
It is best to use the smallest larvae you can pick up with the grafting tool. But that does not affect acceptance. Don’t worry too much about the size of the larvae. The main thing is the conditions the bees have got. They need either a nectar flow and/or sugar water to build queen cells. They won’t build them without good conditions. The second thing is you must get the grafted cells into the cell builder as quickly as possible. Do not delay putting them in the builder once they are in the cell cups.

Please tell me , why bees leave the box after I fell it , am I supposed to close the nuc for 24 hrs or more? And if yes . Does the bee die because of no ventilation
@bennybeekeeper27 күн бұрын
The bees will leave the box if they have no reason to stay. If there is no comb, no brood and no queen they will leave. The bees must be shut in with a queen cell and sugar water until the queen emerges. Usually 24 hours or more. Once they have been shut in for a few hours they will settle down and start to build comb. You also must use young bees out of the brood box to start the nuc.

It’s been hard to find some nice weather for doing bee work down here. But I did graft last Thursday. Did about 70 cells. I’m confident at least some of them will turn out well. We’re right at the start of swarming season here so the bees are in the mood to make queen cells. I found quite a few hives with cups with eggs and started swarm cells last Thursday. I think I’m going to have a bit of a difficult swarm season. I wish I had a heap of equipment so I could just split everything now to avoid swarming
