Goid explanation! I'm a jazz drummer who uses traditional grip most of the time and match grip when it sounds better. Both grips are good. There is no right or wrong.

Mingus said many times that he wouldn't be able to play without Richmond, and about how good of a drummer he is for a band like Mingus had

This is a great series, Justin! I’ve been checking it out for a long time now. I also only recently noticed that you’re friends with Dave Glover! What a dude. In playing around with this I noticed that if you’re struggling to stick that double left into a dead stroke after, you could change the sticking slightly and get basically the same sound. RLR RLR RFF Coming off a stick shot to the head with RR might be easier for some than playing LL into a dead stroke.

Drummers such as Danny Richmond, Art Taylor and Ed Thigpen are some more notable examples of phenomenal musicians who never get the attention they certainly deserve. All those cats were classy, possessed originality, style, technique and were all ‘round badasses on their instruments. ✊🏼🥁🔥

But still in some standards it's ok to play on "one" not on the end of "four".
@JazzDrummersResource Жыл бұрын
Oh for sure. Landing on one just puts a strong. At the end of the conversation. For the bulk of the tune, we’re trying to keep the conversation moving forward. But it would be pretty hard to play the entire song and never hit 1!
@bourgeois_radical9027 Жыл бұрын
@@JazzDrummersResource Yeah, indeed. I remember as I started playing jazz smbd told me that there is "NO ON ONE" accents in this music at all. That confused me a lot and I stoped doing it. But then I realised that it probably wasn't the absolute truth :)

I just found your channel. I'm studying jazz piano at college and it's really difficult to find explanations of jazz rhythms for any instruments other than drums and even for drums, it's kind of difficult! Thanks for your solid explanation!

Absolutely one of if not the most underrated drummer of our time. Another drummer I think goes under the radar is Doane Perry formerly of Jethro Tull, an absolute outstanding drummer, as a guitar player I have much affection for the men on the skins.

Thank you best drummer on the planet! They were legends but racism existed back then and as Danny said a lot of rock bands stole from Mingus getting hits and they got nothing. Sad shit. Jazz Gods treated like common people.
