I would love to see a generic FPGA afordable microcomputer that was just powerful enough to play Spectrum, C64, MSX, CPC and Amiga 500, with that classic wedge shape and keyboard.

There is talk of a $100 MiSTer clone but I'm not sure if it is out and about yet. But that would just be the internals. You'd still need to stick it in a case/keyboard of some sort, which is its own project (as you've seen).

Speaking of labor, what would be nice is a flat list of all of the disks you have, even if they haven't been put up on the site yet. That way we don't send you duplicates, and also a wanted list. I have a few boxes of disks that I could go through for stuff you are missing.
@IntenseGrid27 күн бұрын
definitely don't remove the code. It may be useful.
@AmigaLove26 күн бұрын
No code has ever been removed from the disks - just the disk previews (that you view in a browser) on occasion. On a couple of rare occurrences I've been forced to as the text files actually broke the UI.

Interesting, whenever I see these demo's, I'm the only one whoever consider dual monitors? I figure for the vast majority of the time with the C128 GEOS, you're be on the 80 col mode, with exception coming across C64 GEOS program. But that would be awesome to be in a graphics program on the 40 col monitor and be able soft toggle to 80 col monitor for some other program. However, being that owned both a C64 and C128 in that era, apparently, I missed out on using GEOS.

Just curious, what were the options as per have a real time clock (RTC) that as compatible with GEOS? So for, the only options I found was the Turbo Chameleon for the C64, of which isn't compatible with the C128. Then there's the SuperCPU by CMD, of which appears to be extremely difficult to locate.
@AmigaLoveАй бұрын
For the hard core in the 90s (and many now, still) it would have been almost any hardware made by CMD. Most had internal RTC clock upgrade options, particularly the FD-2000, FD-4000 or CMD HD. They even made a smart-mouse that had an RTC built inside it! I actually recently acquired a SCPU128 (had to sell my SCPU64 to afford it) but neither of those devices had RTCs. Holy crap are they cool, though.

This is a really exciting project! I have a bunch of DevWare and CranWare numbered disks. Before today, I've seen barely any mention of them on the Internet. I created ADFs of all the still readable ones, but didn't know of a good place to put them. I'll have to go through and see if I have any that you're missing! The ones I have were gifted to me by a friend-of-my-father who was cleaning house. All hand written labels, so they were copies of copies...probably from the DC-area user group. As a kid, I recall there were several fun games, as an adult I find myself more interested in the random developer software and utilities...and I always loved the huge, beautiful 1.x-era Icons. IMO, this kind of stuff is some of the most important to archive, as it's at the highest risk of being lost forever. Later archives, like Aminet, were distributed on pressed CDs that are much more durable that floppy disks. There was also more centralization in those later years....Aminet, for a while, being one of the largest archives on the Internet.

Thanks, Nicholas. In the description below the video I link to an article that lists all the things you would need. The build is NOT a cheap one, but - and I mean this sincerely - if I can do this, almost anyone can. the build itself isn't tough once you get the pile of parts. The hardest part is acquiring everything - and waiting. Honestly the Ironclad took a few months to arrive they are so back-ordered. Anyway, thanks for watching! And if you have the means don't be afraid. You can do it!

There's so much politics and an ephemeral nature to the Internet, having a solid archive of this precious piece of history is important. I recall Nectarine demoscene radio being very compromised when the previous incumbant caretaker threw his dummy out because of what someone did/said, and the archive had to be rebuilt from a stream. Many of those music modules are impossible to find, so whilst the vast majority of the music is saved from the output, the modules themselves maybe lost forever. This is good work, thanks intric8.

But what about COMPUTE! In CA we had BMUG which had a monthly floppy. Those have now been archived on CDs you can order. There are also loads of retro user group docs on RSS feeds. The TI/99 user group community was huge and huge archives exist of all those newsletters in RSS feeds.

I'm glad you're organizing these by name of source. I remember my dad having a disk or two from some collective called "Amicus", that had some random stuff on them. I'm less interested in tracking down any particular program that was on them than I am in someday finding out who they were, how many disks they ended up putting out in total, and what all else was on them. So it's good to know that if you ever run across a collection, that they'll be easy to find.
@AmigaLove2 ай бұрын
Hi, Steve. AMICUS was a disk collection that was put together by the magazine Amazing Computing. I have a few of those, too. Sometimes they are unique, and sometimes they are straight-up copies of Fred Fish (FF) disks and even have the number written on the (ones I have like this the numbers are written by hand with a pen). From the numbers I've seen, there were hundreds of disks in the AMICUS collection - probably beefed up by the FF collection.

Thank you, thank you, thankyou. I thought that I was the only person out there who was obsessed with collecting Amiga disks. It is not the software on the disk but the text files, stories and the insights into the Amiga culture that makes these disks so unique and enjoyable. A pirated game disks will have the same game as many disks but it will contain a different demo, scroller, or text file which gives a different glimpse of the past. Your work has opened the door so we can slip back in time and enjoy the creativity that flourished in the Amiga world.

I don’t remember seeing these in the UK. You could go to the library and get public domain software. There was a PC with a huge library on it and you had to buy their specific discs to copy onto. The PC could tell if you used your own discs. The library ones were about 2 quid if I remember correctly, so a bit more than twice the price of normal blanks.

@AmigaLove2 ай бұрын
Only floppies are OK. With the AA magazines, only downside is that they aren't labelled other than 1, 2 or 3. So you'd have to stick them in a drive to see which volume and issue they are. Good news is they usually labelled each of the disk icons with the issue number so popping them in is generally as far as you'd have to go.

You could get some sampled audio out of PC compatibles back then by bitbanging the PC Speaker port, however, audio quality varied greatly and it was very CPU intensive. You certainly couldn't listen to sampled mod tracker music and play a game like Shadow of the Beast at the same time.

This is something I've thought about, not just for the US, but Germany (and by extension, the UK and other places) - many software collections on the net are limited to US-based software. What about *German* PD, disk mags, or simply *German-localised* software? I have scanned some manuals/third-party software guides, and I barely managed to get through one third of the floppy collection I got with my Amiga (most of them went bad after 30 years, sadly). My take on this is: If you have originals, preserve the documentation along with the disks. What good can the software be if nobody knows how to use it?
