Hi Stephen, Jim here. I met you on Monday this past week at Brian's shop. I appreciated your advice on the gear needed to go DCC. Thanks for sharing your KZbin channel with me. I have enjoyed watching the switching runs and this explanation on how you prep for your operating sessions. I'll continue to watch and learn.

Can't classify anything when the classification yard is completely full. Classification yards are not for storage! I think you need another good size fiddle yard / staging yard for storage.

I like your mill a LOT ! It takes and needs a lot of work when you get to that size. This is simply more like the real thing. We (modelers) all have to deal with space issues. But that doesn't mean that it's a good idea to put 3 or 4 industries when there's only room for one. It's sometimes incredible what can be done with a bit of creativity and skills. Congrats. I would certainly like to operate your layout. It's a very nice mix of everything seen around a mill. Little advise for you : Maybe lowering down bell sound a bit. It's my opinion. Atlas MP15dc and Quantum sound is most of the time too loud !!! Especially the bell.
@stephenjohnson2626 күн бұрын
Thank you and you are welcome to come for an Operating Session. I live in Frederick, Maryland so if you are ever in the DC or Baltimore area I am 45 minutes away. I agree with you on the bell and the level you hear is considerably turned down from what Tsunami decoders have as a standard volume. I believe it is the microphone on my iPhone that picks up higher pitches which causes it to sound really loud. Standing next to them the human ear doesn’t pick it up as much. I will experiment more.
@lucgagnon524126 күн бұрын
@@stephenjohnson26 Many thanks for inviting me. I live a bit too far away (Quebec-Canada). But I really like the way you've putted all this together. Like the scenic, ballast job but mainly, the rear mill building. You're right about all you're saying in your video. It takes sometimes long to get thru an OP session. Things have to be done properly and at the right speed too. I like running my trains around delivering loaded and empties at my paper mill. It took me long to assemble a fleet of nicely weathered cars mostly bought on EBay. Some people just have it way better than me. I don't let anyone manipulating them. Engines included. Model railroading is the best hobby in the world ! Keep on your good work. I'm now a subscriber to your channel.

Hi Steve, Another great ops session video, thank you for uploading it and yes I'm enjoying your videos. I'm also enjoying the light hearted humor in the video and the little Easter eggs, like the highway traffic on Grant Ave changes when the video comes back to the Grant Ave crossing, nice little Easter Egg. I know your layout has a track that runs down to a hidden storage yard below the layout, what does that interchange track represent, North Bessemer? Do you have an interchange with the former P&WV / N&W on your layout? In the past you've mentioned a Montour Railroad Interchange, do you use the same interchange for the P&WV / N&W since the Montour had trackage rights over the P&WV West Mifflin Branch? Thanks again Steve and I look forward to future ops videos on your layout. Cheers, Rich S.
@stephenjohnson2628 күн бұрын
So you spotted some Easter Eggs!! That makes me laugh, nobody else has mentioned them. The trackage that goes underneath the layout to the staging yard, represents the Montour interchange and the Wheeling and Lake Erie interchange or N&W based on the timeline. You may catch in some of the videos, the shelving units that I have underneath the layout which represents the entire outside world. Cars come off of those shelves and go to the staging yard first and then make their way finally up to the main portion of the layout to the Duquesne class Yard. Every time that there is a new session, I am writing a whole new set of switch lists and tracklists, it keeps things moving and generally, you’ll never see the same cars for three months back on the layout. Makes for a good variety, thank you so much for catching the Easter eggs and your comments.

This is interesting to watch. In the yard, particularly, trains run very slow. As conductor, I'm often "on the ground" walking ahead of the movement, so the radio instruction might be, "URR 102, I've got your point from the ground, backup 15 cars, walking speed." Also, true to prototype, we sometimes roll along an adjacent track and write down car numbers as we go. So, we are definitely not in a hurry. Overall, if you watch yard jobs anywhere, it may seem like everything is barely crawling around. Yard crews are thinking about safety, rules compliance, etc. So, slow operation is the name of the game.

I incorporate the things I learned and did as an engineer into my layout. Not only does it help with realistic operation, but for those who are new to the hobby it provides a learning experience. Thanks for commenting, stay safe

Hi Steve, Great "Yard Work" ops session, thank you for sharing the video. I also follow Thom Placier here on KZbin and he does voice overs of his ops sessions. That way you can concentrate on the ops session and add the dialog to the video at a later time. I use Windows Live Movie Maker for my videos, but it's no longer available. Does your Movavi editor allow you to do voice overs on existing video? Is the Movavi editor freeware or just free to try? Can you add music and voice overs to the video. Thanks in Advance Steve for info on your video editor. I'm also looking forward to your next ops session video. Cheers, Rich S.
@stephenjohnson26Ай бұрын
Thank you very much. Movavi does allow voiceover editing however I do not have a microphone on my desktop. I’m gonna try doing my next video and have people operating while I take the video and do the voiceover live. If that doesn’t work, I guess I’ll go out and buy a microphone.
