Amazing! Believe it or not I have never seen real snow (and I'm over 60) just some slushy Ice at the top of Mt Wellington Tasmania. Bit different to today for us, about 38C/101F, got to water twice today just to keep things alive and we have water restrictions so need to do it all by hand. At this point I think I'd like a bit of snow and ice.
@myslicechannelКүн бұрын
Haha! I'll do my best to send some your way if you send us some sun!!

You have snow and we have rain 😮 but we can get it up to March so there may still be some. On,y good thing about snow is 🎿 skiing ⛷️ and killing off soil beasties. Yikes looks like a rat 🐀 hopefully he was moving along. I wouldn’t bother doing much either 😂. Have a super week hope it warms up, Ali 🥶☔️🇨🇦

Thanks Ali, I've seen a rat there once before but that was years ago. Hey it's Winter - gotta expect some of the cold stuff!!

Will the carrots left in the ground continue to grow? You’ve got a winter garden, for sure. When will you sow carrots for spring?
@myslicechannelКүн бұрын
From past experience, I've found that if I leave them much longer, they will be attacked by bugs but not grow as it's too cold for growth just now and if they are left for a second year of growth they are likely to go to seed. I don't usually sow my carrots till end of March/beg of April at the earliest - I wait for the soil to warm up , when I see the weeds start then I know my plants will grow too. 😊❄️

I save all seeds I can, but I won't save seeds from a biennial that flowers on it's first year, as I wouldn't want to bring that trait on to the next generation. I let the seeds dry for weeks, and then I put them on a cardboard plate and sort seeds from chaff that way. If it's too hard to get off, I throw the seed away, thinking it has not fully matured. Also blowing is a good method, or just outside on a dry and windy day.

Thank you for the tips.😊

I save my onion seed every year and it seems to work ok. Just need to make sure the original onions are heirloom so they stay true to type. (I'm not even sure there are hybrid onions but worth checking) I found rubbing the dried flower between your hands then gently blowing the dry stuff away works. I cant plant mine until May 😅 PS I would still take them out of the flower, the dried "petals" could harbour fungal disease ( I'm guessing)
@myslicechannel11 күн бұрын
Aha, that makes sense! Thank you for the tip, I will def try that with the pile I have left. Sowing onions in May just feels wrong!

G'Day! Saw your comments on another gardening channel and you piqued my interest. An allotment in Scotland, sounds challenging! I'm in Perth - not Scotland 😋and probably have the exact opposite climate to you so will be very interested to compare how we grow stuff. Drop by my channel sometime and listen to the pipe music (I play the bagpipes btw) and see how we survive with almost no rain and its 39C today so just starting to warm up a bit.

That’s some good carrots 🥕 because even little they taste fab compared to store bought. 😅😅 that’s what I say too the fancy shops would sell them for a fortune. I’m going to aid my soil a lot more and grow my parsnips in big pots again. They did well just not enough of them 😂. A great update have a super day, Ali 🌞🥶🇨🇦
@myslicechannel27 күн бұрын
Cheers Ali! And yes the carrots taste amazing. I don't have pots for parsnips but I think I might try a seed compost like I did with the carrots, or add some sand to the compost to make it more like seed compost.

Hi Ali, thanks for commenting. It really is an easy recipe, I've done it a couple of times now and it works great. I hear we are to get some rain and strong wind but the worst is to be in Wales and England. If the forecast is correct, we'll be fine!! 😊 Take care.

Interesting about the wrinkly skin vs the perfect insides. "ugliness is also only skin-deep" 😅: love it! If my apple tree ever actually gives fruit, I'll be trying this! Wonder if I can bastardise the concept and do it with Malay apples, which are nothing actually like apples (but you can make vinegar out of anything, as I have found out in numerous fruit wine brews in the past!).
@myslicechannelАй бұрын
Oh I don't know malay apples! Suppose if it's fruit it can ferment. I've been pretty lucky with my fruit wines so far in that they haven't turned to vinegar but I have had a couple yucky veg ones! (don't recommend parsnip wine)
