Howie was soooo good but only approached greatness, never attaining it. Sad. He was a true artist in the ring.

Sparred with Howard in '73 after he won the 126 lb. Golden Gloves sub-novice in NY. Damn, that boy was fast.

Taylor won this. He was busier and didn't get enough credit for his body punching.

Look at the precision and speed of some of those punches, especially the jab and right-cross counter. Lionel could have been anything. He was a natural. But he LOVED eating, and he smoked a couple of packets of durries a day. This was well-known at the time. Around the time he lost his title to Olivares, he was noticeably gassing out after handling his opponents with ease. The first few rounds against Olivares, he was very competitive, but that left-hook to the liver and other body shots got to him pretty quickly. He wasn't so much a good-time Charlie, but he certainly did enjoy indulging himself. Before he fought Fernando Sotelo, he scoffed a bowl of Mexican rice. It's no wonder the body punches got him. Lionel was also a lovely bloke who fell upon hard times later in life and got some bad press, but everyone loved him anyway.

Recuerdo...

Tragic how both these guys ended up...Howard dying of metastatic cancer at 59 and Meldrick suffering terribly from pugilistic dementia. So sad. Howard was always at war, I believe, within himself. He was blessed with first rate athletic ability as a boxer but he was also highly intelligent so he wondered why he was blessed and cursed by his calling as a boxer. He didn't like pain and he didn't like inflicting it.

When watching this fight listen to the commentary regarding Panama Lewis 5:00 and why he can't be in the corner when he's the trainer of Howard Davis Jr, Up until this fight Howard's trainer has been his father (Sr). Panama Lewis was one the most criminal characters in the business, he was in Aaron Pyrors corner the night he fought Arguello and there was funny business with cocaine in the corner as well.

no doubt who the commentators were told to tout in this fight... taylor was to be the next cash cow... the first rnd which was a feeling out rnd where neither fighter did much or imposed any will on the other... yet we heard numerous times how taylor was "dominating"... or how crisp he was... or how slow davis traditionally started... all designed to manipulate oppinions about the fight...

Taylor clearly did the better work in the first, though. His jab pretty much dictated.

The judges got it right, for once, great fight, both fighters gave their all. They were evenly matched and a draw was a fair result. You hate to see a loser when both men performed brilliantly.
